In 1.8 I found a new groups page and groupig of groups. But I didn't find any activity supporting grouping. Is this only planned for 1.9 or are there any features in 1.8 supporting groupings.

your right grouping can be done by users but not activities to be given per group.

the grouping is still the same as 1.7, how I wish grouping can be applied to activities...
You're right, scheduling activities by group has been pushed back to 1.9.
The 'grouping' concept allows you to put groups into groupings. Also these groups can span courses now if I understand it correctly. (I don't think that the admin interface for this made it into 1.8 though)

Playing with 1.8beta, I have seen groupings on the course/groups. Is this what you mean by the admin interface? If so, it was in 1.8 last I checked.
Correction, I was not looking at /course/groups.php when I saw the interface for groupings. It was actually /group/index.php which apparently is a new link in 1.8 (I have not played with 1.7). In any case there appears to be 2 places to manage groups and I am concerned about possible inconsistencies that might arise from this (as well as general confusion).
In /course/index.php on line 188 is appears that the order is hard coded to sort the member list by lastname, firstname rather than fullname which allowed for the user to choose whether the fullname was firstname, lastname or lastname, firstname.
I posted MDL-7163 in the hopes of providing greater flexibility to the user about how the course members get sorted. This is particularly important with larger courses. I started to modify the files in /course/groups.php like I had for 1.6 and then when I was not seeing the changes I anticipated I noticed that the new interface uses /groups/index.php.
Shouldn't there really only be one way to manage the groups for a course or am I missing the point here?

I'm using 1.8.1, and I'm a new Moodler. There is probably a simple answer to this, but could someone help me why I can't see an option for grouping, but I do see Groups, and Members of?!

what we really need is to create groupings with different groups in one course. And in the activity I choose a grouping for this activity and the groups of this grouping is choosen for the activity.
An example in one course:
Activity Forum1: grouping 1 : Group1A+Group1B+Group1C
Acvtivity Wiki2: grouping 2: Group2A+Group2B+Group2C
Thats the way it should work in 1.9. Is this correct?

The admin interface in course is part of 1.8.beta. But the feature should only work in the wiki module (it doesn't work for me) in 1.8.
Thats a strong usability problem in my opinion. If a feature only works in one module it should be part of the settings form of the module and not be integrated to the admin/groups interface.
I think we should go back to the old admin/groups interface in 1.8.
