just learning, and feeling lost

OK, I was really looking forward to using Moodle to assit me with an online book club course that I hope to run with some intermediate students, but I am admittedly clueless.  I got through the independent download stuff and everything is installed, but I don't know if this was what I was supposed to do.  I could really use some help.

Here is the starting point for my millions of questions: I don't have my own website, but my school does.  Can the school website host Moodle, or do I need to go through one of the listed/suggested providers to get this done?

Any help would be appreciated - I saw this demonstrated at a private school during an observation day, and it looked so easy...thinking that it might not be so easy after all, and I really need a hand with this.  Thanks!

Tracey

Tracey - Welcome aboard! If your school is willing to run a PHP based application on their webserver and install it for you then the answer is yes your school can host it. Our school hosts its own website. If however the tech folks prefer that you go through a provider then there are some cheap (and even free) ways of trying things out. The most technical thing about Moodle is installing it. Using it once it is setup is very easy. We had one day for our faculty where we showed them how to login and upload their syllabus (which is what they were required to do). After that they have been discovering Moodle on their own and are doing very well at it. We had no training for the students other than go to the Moodle website (we gave them the address) and from there they were on their own. The forums are a great place to get advise. The folks you find on moodle.org are much like yourself - interested in education and using technology to assist in that endeavor. Feel free to ask your questions, search the forums to see if others have already asked a similar question that may have already been answered, and check the documentation files at http://docs.moodle.org/ - Peace - Anthony

Hi,

I too would like to use Moodle as a summer reading blog for my students and faculty/PTA.

What have you found out.  I feel clueless as well.  Since I can't open the moodle book club options, it's difficult to know how to get started.

Hi Tracey, if you work in England (or UK), and are looking for an independent hosting company you could make some enquiries at Astrohosts:
http://www.astrohosts.co.uk/

They host several of our Moodle installations. The are small and therefore approachable. They simply put Moodle 1.9 on their server for us, and have meanwhile agreed to add some extensions on to their default site (similar to the CLEO installation).

I am not sure about the exact cost; it is something in the region of £80, and I find that affordable, especially since I get on well with these people. I don't mind paying £10 extra if I get good service and communicate well with these people. Just look on their website, but if it doesn't mention Moodle, email them and ask, or phone them.

Good luck.
