In your third from last paragraph, you say

\fbox{x=\frac{1}{2}} works, whereas x=\frac{1}{2}} does not

There is an extra '}' at the end of the second LaTeX expression.

OK, that's mystifying. Did you try the expression in your LaTeX filter debugger?

http://yoursite/filter/tex/texdebug.php

See what hapapens when you test the expression there. The Help at the bottom of the debugger page might give you some clues.
