Hello, I am a new Moodle user. This is the background of the above error message:

* Win XP Prof / XAMPP 1.5.5 (MySQL + PHP + Apache combo).

* Moddle 1.7

* Book_16.zip installed under /mod Directory renamed to /book

* "Book" appears an an available activity.

* I was able to create a Book as part of a course.

* When I try to either edit (as a creator) or view (as a student) the Book I get the above error message.

I have had the same problem and was able to do the following:
Login as an Admin or Teacher. Both of these roles seem to allow the creation of the Books and Chapters.

The error, I believe, is produced because:
1) that a Book is not viewable by students unless one chapter has been created.
2) that the Course Creator is not a valid role in Book. It seems you can create the book, but access to add/modify the chapters is not available.

In fact, I was able to add a chapter to a book created by the Course Creator role, so functionally, there is no problem.

I last used Book with Moodle 1.5 and it did work there. But that version did not have the Course Creator role, that I can remember.

My recommendation is to not use the Course Creator role in Book. By sticking to the Admin, Teacher, Student, and Guest roles, Book seems to operate fine.
