Thanks Mark. Unfortunately I have to run an old version of moodle because the version of PHP on my hosted server is too old to move to 1.6. I've since downloaded the latest 1.5.4+ and this seems to have solved the problem, although the forum module that comes with this version also doesn't like the installation of PHP that I have. I've commented out a few lines of code though and it appears to now be OK. Thanks for your help.
