Need some help here, I am not sure whther I can do this.
If I post a new thread in forum, I can choose who I want to make it available to see.
Example:
I post a new thread for Engineering students, only engineering students can see it.
If I only want lecturers to see it, only lecturers can see it.
If I want everyone to see it, then everyone can see it.
If I want students from a particualr class to see it, then only that particular group of students can see it.
Is this feature available?
I could be completely wrong, but I thought when I set up my forums that what you can do, although it's not exactly the same, is control each board that way. .... so, set one up and allow access only to Engineering, one for Lecturers, etc. There is a teachers only board that is automatically part of moodle...... don't know if this would work for your lecturers?
You mean I do it at the course level itself? ie Create a course for Engineering and then in Forums I can determine that it is for students from Engineering, and do the same for other courses?
Hi Aryon, I am not quite sure what you mean.
Groups forum is here
where you could ask more detailed questions about operation of groups but it might be better to start with Moodle Documentation
and read about course settings and enrolment (where you can control who has access to a whole course), roles and capabilities (an enhanced feature in 1.7) and groups where you apply groups to forums, say, within a course.

The way forums and groups works is that you create groups for a course - teachers can belong to these groups as well as students and people may belong to more than one group.
When you start a discussion topic you can then either post it for all participants on the course or for only a particular group.
So as long as you're happy to set up the right groups, I don't see any reason why you can't do what you want. It should also be possible to do this with roles and permissions too instead, though I don't have enough experience with that to know the details.
