Learning Object vs Learning Activity Import/Export

Learning Object vs Learning Activity Import/Export

This post is really part of a broader question that's been on my mind over the weekend, and that question is:

While there is clear and ongoing interest and support for the importing/exporting of both learning objects and quiz-type questions in most LMSs, what about learning activities? That is, what is the outlook for someday being able to compose activities (assignments, workshops, journals, discussions) in (presumably) XML, allowing an activity to be imported straight into the native assignment/workshop/discussion tool of a given LMS (in this case, of course, Moodle)? Or to have composed a workshop, for instance, in Moodle, and have Moodle export that workshop with full metadata (including rubrics/criteria, example files, etc)?

We have SCORM etc. for (generally static) learning objects (content, assets, self-tests), QTI etc. for importing/exporting assessment questions, but what about submitted activites? I can't imagine I'm the first person who has asked about this, but I'm not finding a lot of discussion of this on the Web (or else I'm just missing it).

Jared,

That's exactly what IMS Learning Design is all about. Under IMS Learning Design, you create "Units of Learning", which can include one or more "activities", where activities mean a forum, a Learning Object, etc.

See the IMS web site for more info, and the unfold project at http://www.unfold-project.net:8085/UNFOLD

Awesome information; I'm reading through it now. Quickly, though, is there Moodle support for importing IMS Learning Design? What about other LMSs?
