Questions about using the Lesson Module

Questions about using the Lesson Module

Hi

I am working with a tutor to set up a quiz using the lesson module - students must get each question right before they can continue to the next, so lesson seemed more suitable than quiz.

I would like to know if I have missed something with the following, which have been fed back to me from the tutor:
  • It is difficult for students to see their results at the end of the lesson before the page redirects. When they go to the gradebook to review their score they cannot review attempts. Clicking the score takes you to a new attempt not the overview of the previous attempt.
  • When custom scoring is set to yes I can set individual question scores but not a maximum score so I end up with a score of 11 out of 0, which returns 0% instead of 100%. Reverting to non-custom scoring I get 9 out of 9, which returns the correct percentage.
  • I have set each question to return to the same question page if the student guesses the wrong answer, so that they must try again until they get it right. However, scoring only records the first guess so that if you got a question right on the 2nd attempt it would receive a 0 score, instead of 1 for correct, which we would prefer.
Yours
James

Hi James,
Been down this road. You raised 3 points. I feel more comfortable with the last two. I think Lesson settings have most of the answers. You didn't say which version of Moodle so I will stick with 1.5.4 but this will generally be correct for 1.6 and 1.7.
1. See their results, see number of attempts. How about showing the students their running score. Others may want to make suggestions here, we don't use grades, just pass or fail.
2. Custom scoring. Go to Lesson settings and change the Max Grade from 0 (current setting from your description) to what ever you want. Alternative. Turn off custom scoring.
3. Only scores first attempt. I will guess you only allow the student 1 attempt in Lesson settings under Flow Control. Change that to a higher number and tell the students how many attempts they have to get it right at the start of the lesson.smile

I need to pop out the door to work but there maybe some enlightenment in MoodleDocs under adding/editing a lesson
Pay special attention to the Grade Options and Flow Control sections. Maybe direct your tutor there as well. May give them some new ideas, like allow review.

Hope this helps Chris

I think with custom scoring turned Off, the problem would persist. The Lesson grading scales the final grade down to X out of Maximum Grade. So, if Maximum Grade is zero, then you will always receive zero for your final grade.

Cheers,

Re: Questions about using the Lesson Module

James Ballard -
Thanks for the reply - I am running Moodle 1.6.1

2. I have maximum grade set to 100, which works fine for non-custom scoring but not for custom scoring. We have it working as intended on non-custom scoring.

3. Thanks, I had max attempts set at 1. However I actually noticed that each attempt counts seperately so I have 9 questions and got 9/12 because I'd had multiple attempts on the some questions.

Thanks
James
