Using lesson features...but not as a lesson

Using lesson features...but not as a lesson

Hi all,

I'm completely new to Moodle, so first of all I'd like to say how happy I am that it was so easy to setup (it only took a few hours to have it installed, running, change the layout, and have some contents in it as well!)

My question is as follows: I want a news item on the main page, and track WHO has read it, HOW LONG they spent reading it, and then have 'participants' answer a multiple choice question at the end of the news item.

This is all possible with the Lesson module, but there's a few problems:

1. It is not supposed to be a lesson, so I'd like it to fall under a section 'News' rather than 'Lessons'.
2. It should not say 'end of lesson' at the end. (The best thing would be a report showing the answers of all participants.)
3. Multiple choice only allows four answers, I need at least five.
4. Remove feedback to question - I see someone just asked before me, I guess for this I have to upgrade to Moodle 1.7?

I hope that's not too complicated, if at all possible! I'd be happy if at least the first and second ones can be solved...
Thanks for any help!!

Frank

Hi Frank,

Always happy to help someone who enjoys jumping off the cliff 微笑  I maynot understand exactly what you mean, so give me feed back.

1.  Move your lessson to the News section.  I think you can rename it news and hide the item called news.

2. I will pass on this one, I don't show other students how they ranked.  Somebody else answer this and educate me as well?

3. Go to Lesson settings (Update Lesson in 1.7), change max number of answers or branch links   from 4 to what ever.  See add/edit a lesson in MoodleDocs.

4. Are you saying "remove feedback screen" which comes up after a student answers?   If you don't want to grade/score the question, turn custom scoring off and don't put in any answers.   The default will move the student to the next page (I think this works in 1.6 onward).  Somebody else may have a better answer to this one.

Hope this helps.

I'm completely new to Moodle, so first of all I'd like to say how happy I am that it was so easy to setup (it only took a few hours to have it installed, running, change the layout, and have some contents in it as well!)

I wonder why it took you hours when normally it takes minutes.微笑

I want a news item on the main page, and track WHO has read it, HOW LONG they spent reading it, This can be seen from logs.Unless you want that the user should not be able to take the quiz before spending at least 'x ' minutes over the piece, there is no need to put the news as a lesson. posting news would be sufficient.

and then have 'participants' answer a
multiple choice question at the end of the news item.A simple MCQ quiz can be inserted as an activity in the desired page and a html link saying something like ''now answer this question'' can be placed at the end of news item. remember: quiz cannot be taken by guests but lessons can, though grade will not be recorded.

(The best thing would be a report showing the answers of all participants.)....this is easily possible if you make a choice instead of lesson or quiz. though lessons can also show high scores and high scores of any quiz can also be shown by adding a block called 'quiz results'. but answers of others may be shown only if they agree to show it with their names otherwise it is shown anonymously.

Multiple choice only allows four answers, I need at least five. says who? MCQ can have any number of options & i have used upto 10
4. Remove feedback to question - I see someone just asked before me, I guess for this I have to upgrade to Moodle 1.7? Yes, that someone is ME. Chris has tested the lesson of 1.7 and has painted this forum red with his sky high praise. But 1.7 is not officially released as yet.

hope you have some solution 微笑

Thanks very much for your answers.

- I wonder why it took you hours when normally it takes minutes.

Yes it took only minutes to install and get it running, then a few hours
to figure out how everything works. Well, still having a few problems:

- Move your lessson to the News section.  I think you can rename it news and hide the item called news.

How do you move something to a different section? So far I've only figured out how to move things around the page, and then I still haven't even figured out how to move things from the 'left or right frame' to the 'middle frame', such as on the main starting page.

- I want a news item on the main page, and track WHO has read it, HOW LONG they spent reading it, This can be seen from logs.

Thanks, I'll use the logs (although I do prefer the way the simpler/more concise overview of the Lesson module).

- A simple MCQ quiz can be inserted as an activity in the desired page and a html link saying something like ''now answer this question'' can be placed at the end of news item.

What kind of page? A custom web page? The Latest News section in Moodle is a forum - not suitable I think for 'inserting' things. What I would like is just an 'empty module' in which I can add an activity, choice block, etc. and put them in a certain sequence. Is there such a possibility?

Hope I'm not sounding too ignorant about the possibilities...

Dear friend

Please tinker around with your moodle a little bit. All these things are possible. You gotta jump into the pool to learn swimming 微笑 and important, read documentation that isavailable here(opens in new window)

Please get your feet wet. You can easily insert links in news section .

Quiz can be made bang on the first page itself- see screen shot

Please read the documentation carefully. It's very comprehensive and will resolve all these doubts.微笑

Sorry for this late reply, I didnt have time until now to 'swim around' in Moodle. I know how to insert links, create webpages and so on, but my concern was with the customization - mainly controlling exactly how it looks / what the layout is. I've checked the possibilities but to get exactly what I want would require some modification of the code, but...I don't mind plunging into the 'deep end of the pool'
