Hosted webspace on 1&1 germany doesn't support all moodle features

We checked now some times the performance of german 1&1/puretec provider. The moodle compatibility test says all right. But we found some problems:

- themes are not correctly shown after some time
- no support for backup
- no support for the delete of a course.

As a webspace customer of the provider we can't change the settings of php or the server. We can't check the server log files.

We spoke with the support of the provider. They can't explain the problems and say the are not the right people to solve script problems of moodle.

We tested the same installation on other servers and got no problems.

Our consequence: we change to an other webspace provider.

To be correct I think it technically supports all the features needed, but they do have some wierd configuration that sometimes caused this very simple script to fail (eg if you reloaded it a few times it would die):

/theme/brightretro/styles.php

It was pretty poor form of them not to look into it for you though.

<< all the features needed>>

sorry Martin. I think backup and delete are basic functions that are no running on this provider

Yes, certainly, you're right.

I'm very curious now as to the real reasons for it, but shrug, who has time!?  smile

Hmmm quiete weird!
But what kind of deletions?! File deletions? or database related deletions?

After I moved my moodle to another server, the backups also failed.
Then I noticed that the zip was missing blush

Also had a problem with some deletions of files.
In my case permissions, the user running apache (wwwrun, httpd or apache) has to have sufficient rights to access the Moodle data directory!

If you a referring to auto backups of Moodle 1.2, did you set up cron ?!

Probaly this message is too late, because you already switched to another server/provider.

Regards,

Huib

I do have an 1&1 virtual server, where Moodle 2.8 works fine!

You can check it out on http://easa66.info/moodle

It works fine on all platforms like Windows, Macs, Linux, including tablets and smart-phones, and with all kinds of browsers.

They provide you also with an installation program for moodle!

It uses a CentOS-6-x86_64 and with Plesk  you can install moodle without any problems!

You can back-up your system with Plesk or the Cent-OS!

So, I do not see any problems!

Cheers

Otmar

PS: On Webspace you have problems installing moodle, cannot install it, as you must not locate moodledata  in the www-Area!

I'm not sure there's much point in dredging up an 11 year old thread...
