We have recently implemented Moodle in all of our classes to supplement what we do in the classroom. Moodle allows me to provide learning resources to the student that they can explore outside of the classroom. I find it very helpful for providing resources to students that they may have missed in class due to an absence. Students know to check Moodle and can keep up with work even if they are home sick. I use quizzes to help the students focus on the material that I consider to be important and to prepare for tests. By giving the quiz as a homework assignment, I can use class time to engage the students in conversation rather than administering some type of assessment. Further, I can review the quiz results and see what topics or questions are most frequently missed and highlight those weaker areas to make sure the students are clear on what I am trying to teach. If I show a film in class or have a guest speaker, I like to use a forum as a way of assessing what the students picked up on from the speaker or film. In that way, I can focus my energies on what they missed and simply reassure them that they are on track with the stuff that they understand. Oftentimes, I am pleasantly surprised that they have made insights that I had not anticipated and thus we all learn together. I also use it so students can upload PowerPoints for in class presentations. That way I can review the work before they present and then have everything in one common place. I have found Moodle to be a powerful tool for enhancing what takes place in the classroom.

Since we have the benefit of meeting with the students I would like to think that most of the learning and teaching takes place in the classroom. I have found that Moodle allows me to do things that would normally take away from classroom time so that I can more effectively (and hopefully effeciently) use the classroom time I have. Moodle helps me to focus my time in the classroom on what the students really need or are not getting. We talk in class and I have them do reading, complete quizzes, participate in forums, etc. outside of class. Then I use that information to help me to focus the class conversations. You could say that I am teaching in an online forum discussion when I reply to students, give feedback, etc.; however, I still see the classroom as the primary place where I do my teaching. Moodle just helps me to do that better. I define Moodle as a tool to help me teach better in the classroom and to better meet the needs of my students.
