Emoticons on Moodle.org and Firefox

Emoticons on Moodle.org and Firefox

Eduardo Hernandez
Vastuste arv 19
Hi!

I use Firefox 1.5.0.6 under Windows at home and I can't use the emoticons from the HTML editor here at Moodle.org.

Whenever I try to add one, I get the pop-up window then my browser tries to download the PHP file dlg_ins_smile.php.

Is it only me??? .. Any idea of what could be causing this?

Works fine for me with exactly the same setup. wide eyes Try deactivating ALL Firefox plugins/extensions and see if that helps.

My problem is I can't click to have it added, I have to drag it from the pop-up window into the HTML Editor box. Also, I can't add hyperlinks with my setup.

XP Pro
FF 1.5.0.6
Ext:
NoScript, AdBlock Plus, PDF Download, SwitchProxy, FlashBlock, ForcastFox, and SiteAdvisor.

I block no scripts from moodle.org or moodle.com

Will add to bug tracker.

Bill: Before filing a bug try it with all Firefox plugins disabled. Plugins can do all kinds of weird and wonderful things, and may often interact unpredictably.

I just tested this with the same setup and yes, it is happening to me too.  I have not installed anything since this began, so, has the html editor changed in any way?  I have DOM Inspector, View Source Chart, and Edit CSS installed.  Hmm, I just tried it with IE and I get an error message in the popup box.  Something is definitely wrong.

Chardelle: Try it with the Firefox plugins deactivated before reporting, please! I'm using Firefox 1.5.0.6 on WinXP Pro SP2, and it still works fine: thoughtfulclownclownclownthoughtful

Okay, I tried that but no effect.  However, like I mentioned above, this is not a FF issue.  The file does not get loaded into the smiley popup window in FF, IE, or Netscape. I've tried disabling all sorts of things, e.g. McAffee, but still no go.

If I try going directly to the file--IE says it isn't there and Mozilla tries to download the file:

http://moodle.org/lib/editor/htmlarea/popups/dlg_ins_smile.php

Whereas other files are loaded fine, e.g.:

http://moodle.org/lib/editor/htmlarea/popups/dlg_ins_char.php

And if I do download the file--it's empty whereas the other is not--so I think there is something wrong with the file.

Chardelle,

Same thing here. Exactly the same. IE shows its classical Page can not be found and FF tries to download the file...

In the university where I work we run Moodle 1.6 and using the same instance of FF but a new tab I can use the emoticons pop-up window correctly.

Hi  Chardelle,

I did as Dan said and disabled all of my extensions and it worked fine. But I can't live without some of them, mainly: NoScript, Adblock Plus, and SwitchProxy. I didn't realize how much junk these scripts filter and the speed I gain in browsing is worth the little inconvenience.

Cheers,

Thanks for the confirmation, Bill. There's definitely something that needs looking into, and it sounds like there may be more than one issue going on here. I'm not the person to fix this but hopefully there's an elegant resolution somewhere.

I am experiencing a similar issue, but not quite the same. I have the problem where clicking on the smiley, the pop-up gives me a 'page not found' error.

Similarly, when I type the URL directly into the browser, I get that same error. However, doing the same and loading one of the other pages in the directory (e.g., dlg_ins_char.php) is fine. All settings/permissions are identical.

For me, this has only just started happening - right after I moved my moodledata directory and upgraded to 1.6.3. I'm not sure why that should matter, as these aren't contained in there, but is something else going on upstream in another referenced file there that's causing this?

EDIT: Interesting note -- this does not occur on a test installation of 1.7, which is running parallel on the same server. Both Moodle installations are under the same parent folder and both moodledata folders are under the same parent folder (outside the public HTML area). All permissions for both are identical and a diff on the two dlg_ins_smile.php files shows no difference.

Interesting.

I'm going to assume (hope) that something in 1.7 perhaps fixes the problem. I've got two separate installs and from the same computer/browser, 1.7 works and 1.6 does not.

Re: Emoticons on Moodle.org and Firefox

I just installed a fresh copy of 1.7 final today and it does NOT work.

So, now here are my results. I am currently running 3 copies of Moodle on the server: 1.6.3 (upgraded from previous versions), 1.7 beta (new), 1.7 final (new):

1.6.3 == emoticons page does NOT display
1.7beta == emoticons page DOES display
1.7final == emoticons page does NOT display

These are all installed under the same parent folder (each in its own subfolder, obviously), all have the same permissions, all have the same parent locations of data folders.

It makes no sense. I just know it's not working correctly.

Well, I'm now officially confused. I just installed another instance of 1.7 final on the server and it works fine. I've followed the exact same steps to install all of these, so I'm confused as to how some are working and some aren't. black eye

Emoticons are definitely broken for me. You click the button and you get a "The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading." pop-up in Firefox. I have an install of 1.6.3 and 1.7 and both are broken. Has anybody submitted a bug for this?

I submitted a bug for this (http://tracker.moodle.org/browse/MDL-7234), but so far have not had much luck with its resolution.

I just noticed this problem if I use the en_us language pack, but not the en pack.

You're right! I managed to fix this by copying the pix.php file from moodle/lang/en_utf8/ to moodledata/lang/en_us_utf8

With this one file in the en_us_utf8 lang directory, the emoticons pop-up window works perfectly. However, I have no idea if this is anything more than a hack of a solution. naeratus

Exactly.
I had my emoticons lost (emoticons pop up windows empty) both with firefox and ieExplorer.
And I fixed it copying the pix.php file from moodle/lang/eng_utf to all my language folders in moodledata/lang wide eyes
