1. Billing Module
This module is found only in Focus and allows an administrator to post Fees, Payments, Mass Assign Fees, Mass Assign Payments, Student Balances, Statements, and daily transactions.
2. Input grades from legacy SIS
Coming from an Access Database, we needed away to input our older grades into a SIS. Focus allows administration to easily transfer grades from our legacy SIS into our new system. This procedure is easy and pretty straight forward.
3. Document Printing Templates
Being able to change the look and feel of different documents without having to edit the code is great blessing!;)
4. Online Course Registration
As many of our students live out of state, allowing them to register online is exactly what we were looking for; Focus provided this option for our students.
While Andrew (developer of FOCUS) has plans to develop integration between his SIS and Moodle, our college also has plans to develop Moodle integration with his SIS, including a single sign procedure.
Anyways, I just thought I would give Focus some attention as its been a great system for our College and I'm looking forward to it excelling in the future.

Re: Open Source Student Information System (SIS) - Focus
I´m a Computer Engineer at Brazil, working with MOODLE about 5 years, and working with OPEN SIS about 3 months.
Then i plan to integrated MOODLE and OPEN SIS.
If you or anyone can help or share codes or DB diagrams, that can help.
I plan to use with MOODLE 1.9.3 for a while.
THANKS.
Re: Open Source Student Information System (SIS) - Focus
Focus SIS has been mired in v2.0-RC2 for half a year. Centre/SIS I can't really tell. I cannot really see their dev trees, so I don't know if the projects are alive or not...
Re: Open Source Student Information System (SIS) - Focus
I too would be interested in these programs; however, they do not appear to be all that active which is a shame. I would love to see a good open source SIS develop.

Anthony,
Could this be the answer to your question?

Martin, do you think Moodle and Focus once integrated would be ready for prime time for Victorian government schools?

Re: Open Source Student Information System (SIS) - Focus
The students will take courses on the in-house Moodle LMS as well as courses offered by other organizations using different LMSs.
We also need to organize students into job categories and automatically enroll them in courses based on their job.
There is hierarchy of administration required since the "boss/manager" needs to access to their employees progress and can add new employees or change job categories.
I would really prefer not to run 2 database systems.
Re: Open Source Student Information System (SIS) - Focus
Can you please let me know the procedure you followed for integrating the Focus with Moodle. Also would be glad if you can provide the code if available for download.
Thanks & Best Regards.

Re: Open Source Student Information System (SIS) - Focus
One of the things I have been researching is putting in hooks to pull constituent information from Moodles backend db.
I wanted to take a look at FOCUS/SIS to do the same but I haven't been able to find the source. Does anyway know where the source may be found. I visited the FOCUS/SIS website but couldn't find a link.

Hello everyone, I am proud to announce the formation of the openSIS-MySQL project on Eduforge https://eduforge.org/projects/opensismysql/ The aim of this project is to work on the last major hurdle to getting the first version of my dream, to combine our products into an Education ERP http://en.opensuse.org/Education_ERP I will be handling installation and support questions since I am fairly familiar with the code. We could certainly use suggestions, feedback and assistance with the programming. areas of need: LAMP , ADOdb, AJAX. Re: Open Source Student Information System (SIS) - Focus
Oncourse is another open source student management system available that is worthwhile to have a look at. The feature list is almost endless. It is very user friendly and has an excellent user manual. Installation only took a few minutes and it can work on a laptop or can be installed on a server.
Currently there is no Moodle integration available, but I am sure when the potential of oncourse is discovered by others, hopefully someone in the community will have a look at that too.
Re: Open Source Student Information System (SIS) - Focus
Anyone looking for a comprehensive open source student information system for higher education and is interested in colloborating to make it even better should have a look at A1 Academia
Already in use in a couple of Campuses and built from the ground up to be modular and easily extensible through the application dictionary.
