Is there a mechanism for allowing students to enroll themselves into groups? In my case the groups would be workshop/study sessions. My ideal would be to allow students to sign up for the groups, with an imposed cap of 10 students per group, and they would also be allowed to change their enrollment (subject to the cap).
The study groups meet at different times so there is usually a good deal of switching during the first week of the semester as the students sort our their schedules.
If this can't be accomplished directly in the groups module is there some sort of signup tool in moodle that would accomplish the same thing? Manually placing students in groups would not be that difficult if there was a list of which groups they wished to be placed in.

The choice module does exactly what I want in terms of allowing students to sign up for groups. Is there some way to automatically pipe the results of this signup sheet into assigning students to groups?

I'm pretty sure there isn't. Sign-up sheets would certainly be a useful groups feature, and I know other VLEs have them for groups.
