Statistics showing guest activity in courses that do not have guest access turned on

As the title says - we have no courses with guest access turned on, yet the statistics for all of them show guest activity. What do these numbers actually show?
I have tried searching for documentation or other forum posts on this to no avail, so I only have two hypotheses:
1. The course summary is shown to anonymous users on the site; these views are counted as guest activity in the course
2. The activity of admins on the site (such as myself) in the course is counted as guest activity (since there is no other role to show; the others are Teacher and Student).
Does anyone know the answer? Thanks
