Hi everyone!

My name is Francisco, I’m from Buenos Aires, Argentina, and I’ve been working as a Moodle Administrator for a few years now. Over time, I’ve jumped into development to build my own plugins, especially because I’m really into the analytics and data side of things.

I wanted to share a project I’ve been working on: it’s an external WebApp that talks to Moodle through a custom plugin I built. It handles the Web Services and uses SSO so users can jump straight into the app.

What’s inside?

I’ve organized the dashboard into a few main sections:

General Stats: All the important KPIs in one place.
Student Tracking: Real-time progress
Course Tracking: Real-time progress for students and their specific enrollments.
Dropout Risk (The fun part): A module that predicts abandonment risk. The best part is that you can tweak the parameters depending on the specific course needs.
Messaging & Certificates: Tools to send notifications and a quick search for certificates by user or course.

Current Status

I’m still polishing the English translations and a few other details, but the project is well on its way.

I’d love to get some feedback! If anyone is interested in trying it out in a test environment, please feel free to reach out. I’m looking for suggestions on what else could be useful.

We’ve added a new High-Engagement Peaks view to Video Tracker.

This update helps teachers and administrators identify the exact moments in a video where learner attention concentrates the most. Instead of only seeing overall completion or average watch progress, you can now spot the segments that generated the strongest engagement.

What it shows
High-engagement peaks highlight points in the timeline where many learners watched, rewatched, or spent more time. In practice, these peaks often indicate:
• important explanations
• difficult concepts learners replayed
• moments that captured unusual attention
• sections that may deserve follow-up discussion or assessment

Why it matters
This makes video analytics more useful pedagogically. It is no longer just about knowing whether learners opened the video or reached the end. It becomes possible to understand where attention clusters and use that information to improve learning design.

For example, if a strong peak appears around a specific concept, that may suggest the section is especially valuable, or that learners needed extra time there. If a key section shows no peak at all, it may indicate the content is not standing out clearly enough.

How it can be used
With High-Engagement Peaks, educators can:
• identify the most impactful moments in a video
• detect areas in the video that may be confusing or cognitively demanding
• refine videos based on real learner behaviour

This turns video from passive content into something that can be analyzed and improved with evidence.
The goal of this update is simple: move beyond “video watched” and toward a better understanding of how learners interact with the content timeline itself.

Custom Report: course information + grades

By course information - you mean Course Description not course summary.
Course summary is an available field; the course description appears to not be available in custom reports.
Consider creating a tracker with the request.

User/Course Participant Report - Suspended Users

interesting issue - The enrollment>Time ended value doesn't consider suspended status as ended.

However, looking at the schema I don't think we could find this value using SQL either. The data does not appear to be written to a table.

Consider looking in the Tracker and if a Tracker doesn't exist, creating one with your issue.

User/Course Participant Report - Suspended Users

I'd like to create a report for my courses to detail user enrollment (date enrolled in course and date suspended in course). I'm using the Custom Reports feature.

I manually suspend users from within my course by editing their enrollment from the Admin block (User>Enrolled users>edit enrollment). Often times, my users are enrolled in multiple courses so I need to know what date they were suspended from each individual course.

I've been unsuccessful with generating a report with the suspension date. I thought that I could use the user "Last Modified" timestamp. However, I ran into an example where an individual was suspended from one course, then enrolled into another course at a later date (which corresponded with the "Last modified" timestamp).

Asking for suggestions, tips, or tricks!

Thank you for your reply.

On the reports, the criteria name display works for "rubric" but not for "making guide".
Below are the details of the tests.

Moodle version : Moodle 4.5.10 (Build: 20260216)

Example Marking Guide : ❌

It doesn't work; the name of the criterion is displayed in the report.
In my Marking Guide, there are 14 criteria. The report contains all 14 columns (one per criterion), but the name of the criterion is not displayed.

I tried :

shortening the length of the criterion name (for example, by renaming it “Criterion 1”)
Reduce the number of criteria

but that didn't work.

Report without the names of the criteria :

Example Rubric : ✅

It works, the name of the criterion is displayed in the report.

Report with the names of the criteria :

In the link you sent me, I couldn't find the course backup.

Can you provide more information, for example a screenshot of the form where you create the rubric. Also the verison of Moodle (not that it should matter). Also there is a demonstration course you can download to check if that works on your setup. See

Hello,

According to the documentation for this plugin, the names of the criteria should be displayed in the report.

This is not displayed on my platform.

Has anyone else had a similar problem?

Hi Jason,

You can view analytics reports via Course navigation > Reports > Insights. For details of how to view them a manager or site administrator, see the documentation Managing analytics.

You can also adjust who receives analytics notification emails as described in the FAQ 'How can I disable Moodle Learning Analytics notifications, or restrict them to certain users, while still enabling models for testing purposes?' in Analytics FAQ.

Students at Risk of Dropping Out - Centralizing Reports?

Hi,

I'm experimenting with the insight reports for Students At Risk of Dropping Out that's included in Moodle. Our goal is for these to not go to the instructor of the course but to be able have 1 account access the reports for the category without that user being enrolled in each course in that category.
Is there a way to make that insight report accessible rather than having it be an email notice sent to course instructors?

I haven't have much luck in finding out more information about setting up this report so I apologize for the base level of this question.

Advice on raising core tickets – “Feedback viewed” completion condition

Consider showing feedback in the students' grade book. If they look at their grade, you can assume that they read the feedback.

Alternatively, follow each assignment with a one-question quiz. "Did you read my feedback?" (T/F). Then make every successive activity or resource conditional based on their answer to this question.

But this also might put a burden on the instructor to always give feedback. If you want to put more burden on the instructor, change the T/F question to an essay question. Then the instructor would have to acknowledge the students' response to the essay question. But this can get a bit circular. You might want to know if the student read your feedback to the essay question about the feedback to the assignment.🤨

In my courses, for each topic, I have a discussion forum titled "Any Questions, Comments, or Observations about this Topic?" This is an open forum for any student to post, and it is not required or graded. If a student has a question about your feedback, this would be a good place for them to ask.
