Hi,

my students report that when they use pictures in their WIKI entries, others cannot see them (and so can't I), but they themselves can. I also have the impression that two pictures mysteriously appeared in another entry than the one they were intended for. Is that a known issue at the moment? Also, I have noticed that pictures that were visible just a week ago have disappeared now.

Maybe someone can help me with that issue?

Hi Elena,

Could you give us some more information about the wiki settings?

  • Is this a collaborative or individual wiki
  • Are you using groups?
    • and if using groups which type (Visible or Seperate)
The problem with the images showing only for the user maybe a setting.

Hi Dave,
thanks for your response and sorry for the late reply, I was away for a few days. Anyway... this is a collaborative wiki, not using groups. I think, we did not change any of the default settings, just added the headings, so that the students could follow the links and write their assigned wiki entries.
Do you have any specific setting in mind that could cause a sudden loss of visible pictures?

Hi Elena,

I testing the wiki in the Mount Orange School on the Moodle Demo site using version 4.5. Unfortunately I could NOT duplicate the issue "others cannot see them (and so can't I)" your students are experiencing. I attached two screenshots of the a collaborative wiki not using groups from the teachers and student viewing each other's images. When working in the the Moodle Sandbox - I was uploading files instead of using the Or add via URL. 

So how are the students adding images?

Are they up uploading an image or using the URL to a picture?

Hm, these are course assignments to complete during semester break, so I'm not in close contact with most of the students now. I think they mainly used copy/paste and the moodle button to insert a picture:
 insert picture button.
I have the feeling that the files just got lost, somehow. Pictures that I had been able to see in the beginning have vanished and when I right-click on them and try to open them in a new tab, I'm led to the error page

I have definitively not moved any files intentionally (haven't touched the Wiki in the meantime), but maybe that's what happened, somehow.

I've tested various ways to add images and all the methods worked. Besides file uploads and URL the copy paste method worked which surprised me. The copy paste worked on the Moodle demo site wiki which didn't work in the past. So not sure what is exactly happening for those images to be lost.

Just a wondering is the image completely missing or is there a broken image icon showing the alt text for the image?

It's the HTML format. I think we left everything in default mode tbh.
The images were completely missing, with just blank space there where I can right-click (see pic), but with no broken image icon.

when I click on Open in new tab, it tells me that the file could not be found:

and when I click on "more information", the info that I posted a few posts ago appears. Anyway, I have the feeling that it started to work again, but I have to wait for students to update their wiki entries to be able to confirm or reject this notion.

I think your wiki is setup fine to display images. The problem is what is happening to those images when uploaded or inserted with a URL. I cannot believe it's the wiki permissions because most users do not change those settings.
Just to double check if students can upload images without them being lost. For example do you use the an activity where students can upload images into like the assignment, database or glossary? The glossary would be the easiest as the student would just need to create an entry and add an image. Then see if the image is still missing. Because then you wiki is fine it has to be another site admin setting.

Hi Elena, What version of Moodle are you on? I this was an issue back in Moodle 2.9 (MDL-48371), so just wanted to see if you're updated to a new version of Moodle.

hm...this would've been such a good explanation, but it seems the college has updated to Moodle 4.1 years ago.
I just heard from my student that it still does not work when she tries to upload a picture. However, it does work when I do it. In fact, most students' pictures have disappeared or cannot be uploaded, but for some it did work. I cannot find a pattern there...

I have a theory about what happened here... Maybe each student's uploaded pictures tried to use the same name (e.g., "image (1)") and either overwrote each other or did not upload because the wiki thought that the picture file was already there. I have no idea why it worked in the very beginning and suddenly images disappeared, but it might explain, why they weren't able to upload new ones.

Another thing that must have happened is that files were deleted at some point, I only have no idea whatsoever, how or why that happened. I just saw that images that are not showing now also are not in that file folder.

Hi Elena - you are on track that that the files missing is causing the problem. Along with why can students no longer able to upload images. I did some more testing on the moodle demo site and cannot reproduce the problem of images disappearing in the wiki file folder. I tried with both editors (ATTO and TinyMCE) and using the same image which which correctly append (#) at the end of each same file to distinguish images with same names. So you screenshot is exactly what should happen for the wiki to use the correct image.

John is correct that this has happened in the past and is hard to replicate in the wiki. So I wonder if there has been some security updates added to your college moodle site by admin that is limiting certain files to be uploaded into a wiki?
Because when I manually delete the files the and clear the cache the images disappear. Plus if a user could upload an image it's available to veiw for them if they do not clear their cache however the image will not be available to other users.
