Recommendations for Upgrading Moodle Theme and Plugins

Hi everyone,

I’m planning to upgrade the theme and some plugins for our Moodle site, I am currently using Moodle 4 and would appreciate any recommendations or advice. We’re looking for:

  • A modern, responsive theme that’s customizable and user-friendly. (it would be a plus to have a dashboard with featured/recommended courses)
  • Plugins that enhance user experience, especially in terms of course navigation, engagement, and report
  • A way to present all course as a catalogue

If you’ve recently upgraded your Moodle site or have experience with specific themes and plugins, I’d love to hear your thoughts. Any tips on compatibility, ease of use, or performance would be really helpful too!

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Don't have answers you seek, but .... a question and a comment ...

Question: What is specific version of Moodle are you currently running? - '4' - could mean 4.0 all the way to latest and greatest 4.5?   Reason asked ... many themes and plugins (some that you have installed right now) may not be compatible with 4.5.

Advise searching Moodle plugins to check.

Comment: suggest changing mind set ... focus first on version of Moodle and let that be your guide for themes and plugins. 微笑

Thanks Ken, for the advice. As we have an external provider, they are the ones responsible for the version upgrades, and I am responsible for managing and playing around with how we use it. However, I will keep that in mind. 微笑

Why not Boost, which comes with the standard Moodle?  You wouldn't need to worry about plugins.

  • Boost is a modern, responsive theme that’s customizable and user-friendly. It has a dashboard. I am unsure what you mean by "recommended courses."  You can customize Boost with CSS.
  • Boost has been designed to enhance user experience, especially in terms of course navigation, engagement, and report
  • Boost can show all courses on its frontpage.

My CSS customization for Boost or on this web page. These are my preferences that may not appeal to others, but I thought that I would share them with you.

I am not saying that custom themes are bad, and theme developers do some great work.  This is simply my own preference.

You might want to try Boost until you know what it cannot do.

Did you know that the plug-in database allows you to filter for the type themes and Moodle version, eg. https://moodle.org/plugins/?q=category:3%20moodle-version:4.3 ?

From there you can visit the page of each theme and get a rough idea from the preview image. You can install the final round in your Moodle and compare.

Hi

That is an impossible question to answer. The query earlier brings 16 Themes for Moodle 4.3. I haven't seen them all. Even if I did, the choice depends on the type and level of the visitors and my personal taste. That is why you need to make an initial choice from the preview images, install them and then evaluate.

Moodle plug-ins in general is even worse. There are over 2000 plug-ins in the database! As you can imagine they do a vast variety of things. What can't you add them as you go on? Maybe, you've ordered a managed Moodle and have to send them your selection of additional plug-ins. Don't forget, Moodle in its basis has a plug-in architecture. So when you install the "standard" (core) Moodle, you have a couple of hundred (core) plug-ins. Instead of studying the plug-ins and trying to draw the line between what Moodle can do and can not do, start with what is there - Resources and Activities are its basic building blocks. There are plenty of resources in the Net, and free courses on the Moodle Academy.

Talking of managed Moodle, it reminds me that the Moodle Cloud has a set of additional plug-ins installed. That could be taken as a sign of their popularity.

Learning to use Moodle will make your life and students' lives easier. On the web page I provided above, I have a link to a video I provide students about setting up my Moodle (Moodle 4 Overview). There is an organization called Quality Matters that also has some standards (rubrics) about how to set up a good quality course.
