External Tool outside the activity picker ... WHY??

External Tool outside the activity picker ... WHY??

Hi there,

Long time no post.

The external tool no longer appears on the activity picker.

External tool has been moved in a weird place on the "more " menu of the course, the interface does not make much sense and several LTI users have asked help about it directly to me.

Please fix this interface issue or update the documentation here https://docs.moodle.org/311/en/External_tool

Cheers!

Hello there and nice to hear from you. That documentation refers to Moodle 3.11 and the external tool was moved in Moodle 4.3 so the documentation reflects this from 4.3 onwards: https://docs.moodle.org/403/en/LTI_External_tools

Hi Ludo,

It's configurable per tool. Either via the tool configuration at site admin, or via the "Show in activity chooser" toggle on the course tools page.

Thanks, Jake and Mary,
the "Show in activity chooser" toggle on the course tools page, is the key. IMO should be show by default, but now I know is there my problem is fixed.

That toggle default was chosen in order to respect the existing default behaviour for site tools. Site tools, according to their own default settings (See "Tool configuration usage") are not shown in the activity chooser in courses. When we added course-level overrides for this setting (i.e. the toggle), we didn't change that behavior. It's opt-in.

If, however, a site tool is configured with "Show in activity chooser and as a preconfigured tool" then you'll see that toggle is enabled in all courses. Then, it becomes a per-course opt-out, rather than an opt-in as above.
