Problem with multiple answer questions on Quizzes with Moodle

Hello, 

I am having some problems on my quizzes with questions that have multiple answers. The questions look correct and lets say that the question has three answers. I have the 3 answers set to 33.3 percent of the mark for the question and the other two answers that are not correct have listed as "none". But if the student chooses all the answers.....the wrong ones and the right ones, Moodle with give him full credit for getting the question right. I need to know how to correct this behavior....so if the student chooses one of the wrong answers it will count it wrong.

YOu must give the other answers negative marks - to cancel the correct answers. What you give is up to you but typically I would have, say, four answers, two correct and two wrong, So I would give plus 50 for the two correct ones and minus 50 for the two wrong ones.

Wow, seems like Moodle would be able to understand that say a question has three answers and they are all set as 33.3 percent of the answer and the others that are wrong answers and listed as "none" as correct it would not assign full credit if those are selected. This must have been changed in a version update because it used to not do this. This is going to create a lot more work when creating Quizzes.

Hello Mike. As far as I can recall you have been able to assign negative grades to questions that are wrong in multi-anwer questions, but not everyone is aware of it - hence the occasional confusion. As for your 5 questions where 3 are correct and 2 are incorrect - the solution is entirely up to you smile How incorrect do you think the answers are? For example, I would probably give the 2 incorrect ones minus 50% each, so your question will have 1 or 0. And as Shirley says, plus 33% for the three correct ones. But you could just as well give minus 33 percent for each - and not have it add up to minus 1. It doesn't matter in the final score. Look at the section Grading options in the documentation Multiple choice question type.

Also, is there are 5 answers and three are correct....how could you counter-act the three correct answer is you only have two wrong answers. This needs to be worked on by Moodle programmers.

Divide 100 by the number of correct answers which would be 33.33% for each correct response. That value is available now in the dropdown list.

Thank you...I will work with using the negative numbers. It just seems odd that this is now a thing. Been using Moodle for decades and selecting all the answers in the past did not result in them getting a question correct. What should happen is if a student chooses a wrong answer it should calculate it correctly. I seem to remember if a student choose one of the right answers and one of the wrong answers....Moodle would give partial credit. There needs to be a questions calculation code adjustment to not accept selecting all the answers wrong and right.

I honestly don't remember it any differently from the way I outlined above - at least not in the standard multiple choice, multi option question. As far as I recall, if you have five answers and three get 33% each to make 100 percent - then if you give the other 2 'none' then the question wil be marked as correct because none means none - so you gain no marks but you lose no marks. By the way there are some interesting plugins relating to multi answer such as the All or nothing question behaviour (adaptive) and All or nothing question behaviour (deferred)

I was just going to ask if there is a quiz plugin that you know about that will correct this issue. So if an instructor chooses the correct number of multiple answers...say three. Then say the others are not correct then it will grade properly. No taking more time to choose a negative settings for the other answers, it just knows they are wrong.

I also noticed that there is no "0" percent to assign to a answer. I just did a question with 5 answers and 2 of them right. 50% of the grade to the 2 right ones....then -50 to the three wrong ones. So if a student was to choose all the answers, Moodle graded it as a "0". Is that common practice to have these types of questions setup this way?

What about the value of None. I have been creating MC questions for years, and as long as I do my math correctly, I never had a grade problem. If I do not do my math correctly, Moodle lets me know when I go to save the question.

Well I don't know about other people, but I do it that way on Moodle.Academy if you have questions with more than one correct answer. It would be good to know if it is common practice with other people who have similar multiple answer questions.

Having none in the incorrectly answers is what we currently have the quizzes setup. If a student picks all the answers in a multiple answer question...Moodle does not count these selections off. They get the question correct.

The setup is key to all LMS systems. Each object: course, activity, each item within the activity has to be setup correctly.

None = 0 points for a response. This is not best value for MC (Multiple Choice with many correct responses). it is an appropriate response for MC with one correct response. One response is 100% the incorrect are none.

if your question had 5 total responses. 3 correct valued at 33.33% and two incorrect valued at none. The students can select all responses and getting 100% of the points for the course. As Mary's has stated negative points for an incorrect response is the appropriate approach to your grade issue. In concept you do not want to reward student's for taking the easy route for completing a question, so incorrect responses should subtract from their total points.

Hi Mike and others!
I've been following this discussion with interest but ... what I think it's missing is one (or more) examples or real-world multiple choice with multiple answers questions so we can try them out and really understand what the OP is wanting or missing. Could Mike please provide those examples?

Hello all,

I am having a similar issue.

I have a multiple choice questions with 'multiple answers allowed'.

I have 4 choices - all are correct and weighted at 25%.

However, when a student chooses only three they get a full point.

I have allotted one point to the question because I want each question in my quiz to be worth one point. 

I appreciate any insight you may have on this issue.

Could be a rounding issue. Make sure you have decimal points set to at least 1.
