I am trying to make a Geogebra moodle question where students need to simplify an expression:

I created the activity on Geogebra. (It is very simple. It has the question and an input box. The word 'Correct' appears when sol=ans.) On Moodle I created a quiz and added the Geogebra question type. Unfortunately, it doesn't really automark it.  Is there a trick somewhere that I am missing?

The GeoGebra question type can only assess Boolean variables. In your GeoGebra applet you have to define such a variable which is true when sol=ans and false otherwise.
Then in the Moodle Geogebra question type you specify which variable should be checked. Afterwards your question should work.

I tried using booleans. On Geogebra it changes from false to true and back once the answer is entered. So the boolean works fine by the look of it. However, Moodle won't show me the result as correct. It still shows as not yet answered. Here is another example:
