Moving Grade Category to top level not possible?!?

Moving Grade Category to top level not possible?!?

Hi there,

I've a couple of grade items in a course and want to create grade categories for them in the gradebook. Creating the first category ("Modul 1") went fine, but when creating the next grade category ("Modul 2") it is automatically created as a sub category of "Modul 1". There is not an option to select the parent category when I create it, later on it's only shown in the edit menu, but not changable.

I want several categories on the same top level. And I want to have the option, to move them into a parent category and remove it there any more.

Also after I have assigned an item to category "Modul 1", I cannot change it back to uncategorized.

I know that in the documentation there is a "blank field" mentioned for removing an item from a category, but this is not appearing in my installation. After clicking on the arrow left of the item, it looks like this:

No option to select "no parent category" or "top level" or something like this.

Have I missed any important point here? How to I accomplish removing items from a category?

My moodle is running build 20240627, I'm working as primary administrator of the site.

Any help is very appreciated.

Cu, Christian

par Christian Rabanus,
After a little bit of more digging and comparing with other moodle instances, I recognized, that in the gradebook the course-name is not appearing. The course name is NOT "Modul 1". "Modul 1" is the name of the first grade category I've created. Instead of "Modul 1", the course name should appear. Why it isn't? Anyone ever faced this strange behavior?

Well, in a new course in the same moodle instance, the grade categories work as expected. Now the course name appears as top level grade category in the gradebook. But the questions still is open: What was wrong with my first course?

Are there any special characters in the name of the original problematic course? just a guess but if thats the cause there is a bug

Hi Brett, thanks for your reply... No, there are no special characters. The name of the course was "Hauptfach Klavier" - and I have used in the new course exactly the same name - and it's working...

I don't want to take more of your time, fellow moodlers. As I'm new to this forum, I don't know, whether I can close this case. But as the problem does not any more exist, please consider this case as closed.

The very first Category (under the "Name" column header) should be your "course full name": that is your parent category. It looks like you have inadvertently changed the name of your parent category to "modul 1".

Edit "Modul 1" cateogry and then remove the name so it is blank -- save it and it will revert back to displaying your "course full name" and that is your "Parent" category.

Then you would click 'Add - Add category" and name it "Modul 1" and it will naturally bo located inside your parent category. Then when adding another category, it will default to the parent category (course full name):

par Christian Rabanus,

Thank you, John. I agree, I must have messed  with the names of the course and the category. And unfortunately, I didn't manage to reproduce this effect. But at least now I understand how to deal with the categories when everything works as expected. And I have already deleted the course, recreated a new one and did IMHO the same as the first time - but now with working grade categories. sourire Thank's again.
