Experiencing some performance issues - Emmanuel Katto Uganda

Hi All, I am Emmanuel Katto. I'm trying to create a quiz in Moodle 3.9 with a large number of questions (over 100) and I'm experiencing some performance issues. Specifically, when students attempt the quiz, the page takes a long time to load and sometimes even times out. I've tried optimizing the quiz settings, such as reducing the number of questions per page and disabling some of the advanced features, but the issue persists. Has anyone else experienced this problem or have any suggestions on how to improve the performance of our quizzes? Are there any specific plugins or settings that can help?

Thanks!

Emmanuel Katto

Hello Emmanuel. I have just moved your query to the Hardware and peformance forum since it relates to performance. I don't suppose there is any chance you could get your site upgraded, as 3.9 is very old now?

Yep, the two documents linked to the heading of this forum, Performance and Performance FAQ, are your starting points. Then comes the large number of past discussion, building a knowledge base. And if you expect specific things applied to your site, you must provide information as requested in Before you post.. Read this...

If possibly I'd suggest upgrading to a supported version of Moodle. I know it not trivial but a lot of work has been done on optimising some quiz scalability issue. the next LTS is Moodle 4.5 which will hae some further improvements

I remember 3.9 LTS, especially its quiz engine, underwent deep optimizations. Then it was rewritten in Moodle 4. Therefore I don't believe the old optimizations are valid any more. Moode 4 was a new beginning and the quiz engine is still evolving along the 4.x versions. I haven't found any performance comparisons between 3.9 LTS later releases and say Moodle 4.1 LTS. So whether 4.x quizzes performs better than the 3.9 LTS quizzes is an open question.

Unless the OP comes up with some numbers, we can't be specific.

You’re right @Visvanath Moodle 4 marked a significant transition for the platform, and it's understandable that the optimizations from 3.9 might not fully apply anymore. The evolution of the quiz engine in 4.x appears to be a work in progress, and without detailed performance comparisons, it can be challenging to determine its efficiency relative to 3.9 LTS.

Hi

On "the optimizations from 3.9 might not fully apply anymore": I would say most of them don't apply to 4.x. But that is irrelevant, the question is whether there is a significant performance degrade going from 3.x to 4.x. A comparison with numbers is quite involved, I would say along the lines of JMeter_test_plan_generator, is quite involved. But if there were, I would expect more enquiries in this forum. In fact it is much quieter here than it used to be. Moodle 4 is well-established now. Other than, "How can I install a Moodle for X number of users" there are only a few enquiries related to performance (degradation).

Knowing the nature of the changes, I don't expect that the Moodle 4.x changes would have a significant impact on performance when a student attempts a quiz. Certainly, these changes have been out in the wild for smoe time, and we have not had many other similar reports. Also, lots of other things have canged in Moodle 4.x which might affect performance.

But, really, with performance issues, it is no good guessing. The only way to work out what the real cause of slowness is, is to measure. If you can do some profiling. That normally reveals what is causing the slowness. Instructions on how to get started here: https://moodledev.io/docs/4.5/guides/profiling
