Practical experience with running Moodle Quiz Question Type Formulas?

Practical experience with running Moodle Quiz Question Type Formulas?

Do we know how many sites run question type Formulas?

From an admin stand point, does it have negative impact on performance compared to without? Anyone tried and abandoned the solution? Or has it always been ... when first getting to know the great features of Formulas, you never look back?

I'm looking forward to hearing about practical experience with Formulas?

Kind regards,

Michael

You will never look back.
Extremely addictive for people in science,  technology, engineering and basic* math (STEM), and other fields that involve calculations.

* Use the STACK plugin for mathematics.

Dominique is very biased on this subject. However he is also entirely correct 微笑

Yes, extremely biased. Look at his web site https://dynamiccourseware.org/.

I have no reason to believe that a Forumulas question is more resource hungry than Moodle built-in questions. That itself is a vague statement, which Moodle built-in question type? There are a dozen, from simple Yes/No questions to the Cloze type. I have never seen a comparison of relative resource hunger of even the core question types. I expect it to be within the same range. Its apparent symbolic maths are done numerically inside.

If you are concerned you have to device a specialized benchmark for the Formulas question type. There is a forum dedicated to Hardware and performance. Its header contains links to some documentation and FAQs. The old discussions too are a "knowledge base".

I have followed every comment on the formulas question type in these forums since it was first created and I do not recall anyone commenting that performance was a problem.

It is indeed a vague concern. However, on the other hand, different question types use different instructions to complete processing. I have no reason to believe that usage of computer resources for various question types will be identical 眨眼

Thank you for pointing to the hardware forum.

Who said otherwise?

Also note that we are talking of question types. The simplest numerical type in the core can be used to ask to add two numbers or ask for the full multiplication table. You agree that the latter will consume more computing power. The question type Formulas is the same. That is why I said, if consumption of computing power is your primary concern, then "you have to device a specialized benchmark for the Formulas question type". But that would be a topic for the Hardware and performance forum.

"Who said otherwise?"

You did, quote "I have no reason to believe that a Forumulas question is more resource hungry than Moodle built-in questions."

And comparing a calculation of a simple sum of two integers carried out in Formulas and production of a multiplication table in built-in question type is just like comparing apples with bananas, it doesn't make sense.

Kind Regards,
Michael
