Grades

Hi!

As I have previously also been one to use Moodle as a student, I have managed to notice one pitfall, that for me, as an admin and a teacher, raises concerns.

Whenever a student finishes courses and gets their grade, we can see that in the student's grade book.

What happens, if the course, that has already been finished by a student and graded, has changes or updates in the quiz? In my experience, from that point on that course shows as incomplete, because the edited quiz needs to be taken again.

Is there a way to avoid that? We don't want to lose our students' grades due to changes made in the quiz section after the course has been taken.

Thank You!

A quiz cannot be retaken after its due date, unless you make an exception. I assume that your course is completed on a date.

Okay, that part is understood.

But, what happens to Students' Courses grades, when it is finished and graded, BUT the Teacher decides to change something in the Quiz? Will that affect the persons' overall grade?

If a teacher, for example, changes the correct answer and "regrades" in a quiz that is closed to students, then yes, the student's overall grades will change.

Wouldn't you expect a student's grade to change if the teacher does something to change a quiz's score?

In a way, yes.

But for the project that I'm working on it is very inconvenient. If this is true, then we have to plan something that would book-keep every student's grades without changes, even if quizzes change.

Maybe You have an idea? It has to be convenient for 150 students at least.

Sure, don't regrade. Or don't allow students to retake the quiz after someone makes quiz question changes.

In Moodle 4, things can get a little more complex because of question versioning. There might be a way to edit a question, yet not use the latest version in the quiz. But if you do this, the student does not see the newest version, somewhat defeating the purpose of changing a question. However, you might want to explore this newer feature.

One more idea is to export the grades before making changes so you have a record of what things were like beforehand.

Here is something that I have done when I discovered a quiz question error and want to fix it. I do fix it. Then, I go to the "regrade" feature which first shows students affected by the change, and provides a checkbox so that you can "check" those who should be graded. If I notice a student's new grade is lower, I do not check this box. I am giving that student the benefit of the doubt that it was my mistake. If a student's grade will be higher, I check their box. I also typically will make an announcement letting students know about my mistake. If it was a student who originally identified my mistake, I give them a bonus point.

Incidentally, other LMSs do not have this "regrade" feature.

There some attempts to appear for quiz, you does have specified time to re-attempt quiz. Sometime it says you can attempt the quiz until you get the passing grade. But depends on your instructor.
