As part of the ongoing maintenance of Moodle we are constantly assessing the usage and uptake of functionality, and the changes in usage trends across the customer base. The Survey tool has been part of Moodle since its inception but research has shown that it is infrequently used and is a large source of confusion for users. Examining the existing user base usage across our data sources was around 0.15% of the user base was showing any kind of usage, even for those instances, the actual usage was either historic (no usage in the last 3 years) and extremely low (less than a total of 100 responses system wide).
With this level of usage the decision has been made to remove the Survey tool from Core Moodle and move it to the Plugins directory. It will remain available to be installed but no longer maintained by Moodle HQ
The deprecation schedule will be
Moodle 4.4 - Survey tool will be disabled for all new installs by default.
Moodle 4.5 - No further changes
Moodle 4.6 - Survey tool will be removed from core and migrated to the plugins database.
