OS is an el8 ... enterprise linux 8 - is that Alma or Rocky linux?

version 9 should be available ... matter of fact, that's what I have been busy with this AM mirgrating from CentOS 7 to Rocky 9 - pain in the arse!
For either one (alma/rocky) 9 has longer life.
As long as you are just beginning and don't have one up and running yet, might want to go to version 9.
When you do ... since you acquired via git (cli) would recommend going all the way with CLI and rather than getting everything in place and then changing to GUI to do the install, do the install via command line:
php admin/cli/install.php
You'll be asked for the same things the GUI does and there shouldn't be as many issues with web service.
