limit cheating in tests (multiple choice, true false) for groups of more than 1000 students.

I have a course with questions in a database (random) for a series of Quiz for a large group of students spread around the world. Some may be in the same room to do the test.

I have identified that some people manage to do the test in less than 1 minute and have a 100% success rate. Which is not technically possible, just reading the questions and answering them takes more time (2 mins minimum). How to limit this mode of cheating? I tried open-ended questions, but students copied answers from the coursebook.

Do you have a solution? why they can do it so fast?

Each test includes 30 questions and only 10 are chosen by moodle.

Well, without bribing a perpetrator to confess, you'll be speculating forever!

How long are the questions - I feel I could answer ten questions in less than a minute...2-4 seconds to read, one to look at answers, one to click..are all questions on one page?

I'm not so sure.

How long would you need to solve this?
wink

But that isn't a true or false question! And I would never be able to answer it...!

True. But where did you get that theOP's questions are T/F?

@Dominique

Can post a sample question here?

You meant the Essay question type, right?

> Each test includes 30 questions and only 10 are chosen by moodle.

What types are those 10?

Where do the other 20 come from?

Domonique,

Have you looked at trying to identify where these questions might have leaked online? That's what it sounds like (that students know how and where to get these questions). You might find that they are listed on quizlet, chegg, coursehero, or other similar sites (which you can find with some easy/simple googling).

Regarding solutions, refreshing test banks helps (to a degree, and temporarily) but once you have a single administration of the new exam form you may find that you're back at square one.

To elongate the shelf-life of a test bank, consider using SEB (secure exam browser) which is a great way to at least limit some features that would allow your test to be exposed online (screenshots, copy paste, etc.).

Those are a few suggestions, happy to help in any way as you look for ways to better secure your exam delivery.

Here are some ideas.

  1. Make sure to jumble the multiple choices.
  2. Increase the test bank from 30 to 3000.
  3. If you are using numeric answers, consider using calculated multi-choice questions.
