Hi everyone,
Our Moodle runs on a dedicated server of a hosting company.
The institution has chosen to use Moodle clone strategy for roll-over.
The hosting company is going to create a new domain, let's call it Moodle 2023, clone our current Moodle on it, and once done, our front-end admins are going to update users, courses, categories, etc.
My QUESTION is: once the front-end admins start editing and modifying the courses, structure and users, will the edits and modifications impact the cloned one on a different domain?
Thank you.

Hi
There is no special documentation for cloning, but Moodle migration covers it. Basically you do a Site backup followed by a Site restore to a new Moodle instance.
If both instances run in the same server, less data is to be transferred across the network, but higher chances of messing things up.
Yes, once you do it properly, the two Moodle instances are completely independent.

Others have tried to clarify and are correct if their interpretation of the question is correct.
'impact the cloned one' - what do you mean by 'impact'?
'front-end admins start editing and modifying the courses, structure and users'
Sounds like massive 'clean up' on the new server - courses deleted? re-organization and adding new users/deleting old?
Is that the plan?

Yes Ken,
That's exactly what they do.
I remember at one point a few years ago, half-way through updating course structures and user data, IT started screaming that the clone one is also changing. Guess everything we did as teachers, mirrored on the clone one.
The IT team has changed and the new guy is offering cloning and I'm opposed to it fearing same thing might happen again.
Thank you in advance for helping.

'Cloning' means 'copy of' to another instance of a Moodle ... in your case to a new fully qualified domain name. Thus, a copy of the old code + a copy of the old DB imported into a new DB for the clone + a copy of moodledata directory means the 2 systems are separate from one another.
What is done in the clone doesn't affect the old site. And what is done in the old site doesn't affect the new site.
That's what Mr. V was saying (I think).
Does that help?

Well, this would be a question for your IT guy then. We have no idea what he is planning by "cloning." A typical clone with a different url sounds like the whole site is copied somewhere else and independent but if the IT guys have other ideas, then you need to discuss that with them.

My interpretation was that this is one of the Year-end procedures.
