Video repository

Video repository

Hello

I believe this question has been raised before, but I could not find any complete answer on the forum or on moodle documentation.

What is the best solution for a video repository associated with Moodle? Specifically, I am running a moodle instance for my organization, with several courses. In most of these courses, we use videos that should only be accessible by the users enrolled in the specific course. As of today we have been uploading videos on YouTube (in "not listed" privacy mode) and placed a link to the video in the moodle course. However, in this way we do not have control over the access, and the videos to the links could easily be shared. We could put the videos in 'private' mode, but we would not want users to have to register to YouTube (and we would have to know their YouTube user to allow them to access the video). So we are looking for a solution where we can host videos, which would allow us to control access (i.e. allowing us to indicate which of our moodle users can access).
Any hint would be appreciated!

Thank you very much
Paolo

Yes, YouTube's licensing agreement (from my non-legal background) means that YouTube and anyone in the world can do anything with your uploaded videos. Some schools don't mind this, but some schools might not want their competitor schools using videos they created by your school.

There are probably many other alternatives.

The alternative that is working well for me is Vimeo. It's a pay-for solution, but you are not giving away videos. Vimeo works well within Moodle, too. You can explore various purchase plans yourself on the Vimeo website. I have a $250US/yr plan. Also, I do not work for Vimeo, so I am not trying to sell you anything; just sharing some of my experience.

In Vimeo, I set most of my videos to "unlisted," meaning that folks searching Vimeo will not find them. You can also restrict embedding to specific domains, like your school's domain.

Some schools use Panopto or Kaltura.  I have worked with both of these, yet I prefer Vimeo.

Here is an example of a video on Vimeo: GeoTools

thank you very much for your reply. It confirms my assumptions, and actually I was going to give Vimeo a try as it seems to satisfy most of our needs.

Hi Rick

You said:
> YouTube and anyone in the world can do anything with your uploaded videos

That "anything" doesn't exist. I quote https://www.youtube.com/t/terms#c3e2907ca8 :

The following restrictions apply to your use of the Service. You are not allowed to:

- access, reproduce, download, distribute, transmit, broadcast, display, sell, license, alter, modify or otherwise use any part of the Service or any Content except: (a) as specifically permitted by the Service; (b) with prior written permission from YouTube and, if applicable, the respective rights holders; or (c) as permitted by applicable law;

- circumvent, disable, fraudulently engage, or otherwise interfere with the Service (or attempt to do any of these things), including security-related features or features that: (a) prevent or restrict the copying or other use of Content; or (b) limit the use of the Service or Content;

- access the Service using any automated means (such as robots, botnets or scrapers) except: (a) in the case of public search engines, in accordance with YouTube’s robots.txt file; (b) with YouTube’s prior written permission; or (c) as permitted by applicable law;

and so on...

Hello Paolo,

In addition to Rick's excellent advice, I can also refer you to our Certified Integration Zatuk (https://moodle.com/certified-integrations/zatuk/) which is created by our Moodle Services team in India.

I believe its features should meet your requirements.

I hope this is useful!

If you want handle numerous short videos made by students that are uploaded into a specific course for rubric-based assessment of their performances, I recommend the Video Assessment Module. This is now ten years old and available free. It is not yet available on the Plugins database for various reasons, but contact me if you are interested: hinkelman at mac.com

I used to use an old version of this and it worked very well. A few years ago I did ask for a copy of the new version, but never got it. That was about the time we discovered my wife was sick, so I never followed up on getting a copy. To me it seemed very similar to the workshop activity, but for video submissions instead of text.

"an old version of this", where? There must be an homepage or a repo or some such thing.

AL, I'm sorry, if I'm bothering you when you're having a personal problem. Put getting better first, my request is low priority, honestly.

If I remember correctly, I had to get it from a Japanese hub of some sort and it was for a very old version Moodle.

AH! Just found the plugin. It's version shows:
$module->version = 2014072800;
$module->requires = 2011112900;
$module->component = 'mod_videoassessment';

That $module->requires date works out to probably Moodle 2.1 or 2.2. Can't find an exact match for the date.
