What are in your Site administration > Server > Email > Outgoing mail configuration:
- SMTP hosts ?
- SMTP security ?
- SMTP Auth Type ?
- SMTP username ?
- SMTP password ?

You may change the final two to hide those secrets, but keep their pattern.

And what is the server platform: Windows Server? Version? Linux? Which distribution/version? Shared or dedicated/VPS?

Hi

Can you confirm a) that SMTP hosts is empty b) where did you enter the port number? Better post a screen-shot showing the first three fields!

My first thought was, if you run a proper SMTP-Auth service over SSL in the same server, SMTP hosts empty means 'localhost', then you know what you are doing. You can convince us by showing us the same dialog in your computer, to the correct port:

$ telnet localhost 25
Trying ::1...
Connected to localhost.
Escape character is '^]'.
220 foobar.example.com ESMTP Postfix (Ubuntu)
EHLO how.da
250-murti.syndrega.ch
250-PIPELINING
250-SIZE 10240000
250-VRFY
250-ETRN
250-STARTTLS
250-ENHANCEDSTATUSCODES
250-8BITMIME
250-DSN
250-SMTPUTF8
250 CHUNKING
P.S. I'm not knighted - yet. HMS won't be bemused calling me Sir.

"SMTP hosts: SMTP Port: 465" is wrong! You haven't understood the https://docs.moodle.org/en/Mail_configuration#Outgoing_mail_configuration.

The correct syntax is "x.x.x.x", "example.com", "x.x.x.x:N", "example.com:N" or empty. Here x.x.x.x means the IP address of the SMTP service, example.com it its domain name, N is the port at which it provides (some variation of) SMTP. Somebody has to provide you such a service, Moodle doesn't have it built-in. If you leave everything at its default, i.e. SMTP hosts field is empty, Moodle will look for one on the same machine as Moodle, at port 25. Yes, this topic is separate from Moodle and difficult to understand when you start Moodle.

Congratulations!

BTW, only now noticed that you've hijacked somebody else's discussion https://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=438657#p1765724. That person won't appreciate that! See https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Thread%20Hijacking.

But, wait! The screen-shots look so similar. Some kind of morphing happening?
;-D

P.S. Your site name is visible on the screen-shot. That is the reason why I wrote "the first three fields". I you don't want the name of you site visible, you have to write to the moderators asking to remove the screen-shot or exchange it with a clipped version.
