I can't update the questions.

I am using moodle version 4.0.3. I added Quiz for the lesson and added a few questions and tested it. The change appears when I preview, but not when I save. What could be the problem? For this action I cleared the cache, restarted the services but no solution. Changes only take effect when I add or answer a new question.

On the screen which shows which questions are used in your quiz, what does it say? Perhaps you could attach a screen-grab.

When you say lesson...do you mean the course or Lesson? I'm assuming the course. Quiz questions in Lesson...doesn't work very well (in theory, you can import questions in lesson when you first create the lesson but even that is quirky, changes to questions in the question bank does not change the lesson, some questions don't work, etc).

When you say your tested it...You took the test? and cannot change the quiz? That is normal. Once there is an 'attempt' in a quiz, you can no longer modify the quiz. Delete the 'test' attempt and the quiz can be modified.

It's a problem for me too.  It seems to stem from a faulty Inability to Remove an Attempt in 4.04.
I can update and duplicate a Quiz Question that has NOT been Attempted.
I cannot update or duplicate a Question or even edit its Grader Information after it HAS been Attempted, AND the solo student's Attempt has been Removed.
Any attempt to "Save changes", "Save changes and continue editing", or even "Cancel" results in the attached Forbidden error.

Sadly, I was wrong about being able to consistently Edit a Quiz Question that has NOT been Attempted at all. Don't know why, but some Questions that have NOT been Attempted will update and some won't update.

Update: Tested on a completely Unused Question in the Question Bank and received the 403 Forbidden Error as a System Administrator.

I am experiencing the same thing.  Using Moodle 4.0+, but has been an issue for a while.  I uploaded questions in Aiken format for a programming course, and it converted symbols to HTML format symbols (ie... '&' uploaded to &).  So, I am working on cleaning up the questions, going one by one through the preview.  If it is wrong, it is nice to be able to update the question right there, by selecting the 'edit' link.  This works good!  The only issue is the question in the preview does not update (it does not update for the student either).  If I delete the student attempt, and they retake it, then it is fine.  I'm okay with that, but it would be helpful if I could at least delete the teacher preview attempt.  Since it is holding on to the previous preview, I have no idea if the question has actually been updated or not, unless I go back in to the edit window.

Not sure if there is a way to add a 'delete previous preview' type button, or a way to clear or refresh the past preview.  Would be even better if the students side of questions would update as well; without the need to totally delete their entire attempt and force them to start fresh.

Hi Liko, thanks for the video. Unfortunately, we're not just experiencing a delay. We're completely locked out of editing some, but not all questions, even as System Administrators after a Complete Course Reset that deleted All User Info. I've tried moving the question to be edited to another category, duplicating it to then edit it, changing the status to Draft, as well as duplicating the entire quiz and then trying to edit the question, but every attempt results in a 403 Forbidden error. Meanwhile, there's another Quiz within the Course that isn't presenting any editing issues at all.

In terms of the change itself, if/when it works: I can understand not being able to edit the question from a student's perspective. In this way, the Student can be assured that their receiving a grade based on how the question was asked, and not a later edit that maybe improved the question after they were tested on it.

Is it possible that the questions that you are trying to edit are being used in another quiz and are located in a shared question bank? In which case, editing it would not work because there are attempts on the question in another quiz...

Update: Tested again after doing a full Course Reset and it's only gotten worse. One Quiz indicated its Questions couldn't be changed because an Attempt had already been made, even after the full Reset. So, I tried creating a brand new Category in the Question Bank to simply create a new version of the Quiz.

Results:
Essay Question - Partially Worked, so long as no "Grader information" was added. When "Grader information" was added, Saving created the 403 Forbidden error.
True/False - Worked; Save successful.
Multiple Choice - Fail; Save resulted in 403 Forbidden Error.

And this was with a brand new Quiz in a brand new Category with brand new Questions.

Also, after the Course Reset, the "Course overview" under "My courses" stopped showing anything for me as an Administrator and the Student, even after the Student entered the Course and it showing up in the "Recently accessed courses" block.

Update: Prevented again after staging a completely New/Clean Install of Moodle 4.04.  I Imported a single solitary Course with No User Data, and still get a 403 Forbidden Error when trying to Edit some Quiz Questions, like Essay questions with "Grader Information" and Multiple Choice questions, while others work, like an Essay Question without "Grader Information". 

Assistance would be greatly appreciated! I've literally spent a week on this and made no progress in fixing this very serious bug. See multiple postings above for previous efforts and information.  Thanks.

Why are you editing questions from the quiz? I mean...you can, but you would be better off editing from the question bank. On both versions of Moodle. You cannot add questions to a quiz that has attempts. You are not blocked from editing questions that are currently in use--but because you are editing from the quiz, the quiz is a bit confused about what you are doing.

Also, REFRESH. The quiz is displaying what it had shown before. Exiting and reopening refreshes the quiz with updated info added to questions.

Have you checked your settings? That can impact behavior. Is it your questions? What does your role permit? Some roles are not allowed to edit others' questions.

For the record, I'm on 4.04 now and have not had an issue. And I was on 3.11, 3.9 before that, 3.7 before that...all the way back to 1.6 in 2008. Checking permissions, roles and settings is almost always the solution.

Melanie, things have changed in Moodle 4.0. What you descrive would have worked in Moodle 3.11 and before, but it no longer works in Moodle 4. That was designed as a feature, which it is in some contexts, but in other contexts is is problematic.

I have a lot of changes to do, most of my questions are Cloze-Question.
Sometimes I have to add additional question within the question type.

I get the following, very serious sounding warning:



"I SHOOULD NOT - delete or add questions, - change the order - change the type of the question"

Okay, but I might have to do one or all of those things. What can happen? Is it a warning because some student could need to restart the quiz if I change the question? Or do I risk to corrupt the question database and lose everything?

These are very different risks... What is it?
