Lesson essay questions - way to force submit?

The way we have lessons set up, students never reach the "end of lesson" page, and instead click an image that takes them to the next activity in the course. 

However, this means that the student responses to essay questions are not showing up in the "grade essays" window. 

Is there a work around for this?

Well, that is the source of your problem. Try to set up your lessons differently.

Yes, the client preferred learners not see the end of lesson page, but in order for them to also use essays, we had to adjust lesson navigation. For anyone reading this later on with similar questions or client concerns about how that page looks, we did discover we could make the end of lesson page more palatable to the client by adjusting some of the CSS, and also by removing a lot of the text on the end of lesson page via language customization. (using to have the text disappear).
