Using a Scale and a Rubric for Grading

Using a Scale and a Rubric for Grading

Hi,

I use a scale instead of points with my rubric and have a question. My scale is "pass, fail, absent, excused" and I only want to use the scale for those students who have actually handed in something.

The problem is that with this combination when I open an assignment to grade I only see the rubric and there is not way to choose from the scale, Moodle obviously chooses automatically from the scale.

Is that the expected/ intended behavior? Is there any way to choose from the rubric (just the way I can when there is no rubric) AND still have the rubric?

Thank you!

Hi Yves,

That is expected and intended behaviour. If you're using an advanced grading method such as Rubric or Marking guide, the aggregated score will be as follows: points scored / points total. This leads to a percentage score, which in turn is translated to a scale value.

Let's say your 'Pass, Fail, Absent, Excused' scale is being used, it'll work as follows:
No score = 0/4 points
Pass = 1/4 points (25%)
Fail = 2/4 points (50%)
Absent = 3/4 points (75%)
Excused = 4/4 points (100%)

This probably isn't the way you intended the thing to function.

You could probably set up the rubric to not score any points (0 points value for all cells and rows) and use it purely in a formative fashion, and add a row with points where you indicate Pass, Fail, Absent, Excused.

The last two of those grade values somehow don't really make sense to me, though.

Thank you Joost! This was really insightful.

Yes, in a nutshell, I want to use a rubric in a strictly formative fashion without points or grades/ values.

I tried your suggestion ("set up the rubric to not score any points (0 points value for all cells and rows") but this does not work, unfortunately, Moodle returns an error that says that the maximum of points value need to be > 0 and that different criteria cannot have the same points value.

Is there any other way to use the rubric without awarding points?

Thank you!
