Hi moodle community,

I would like to bring to your attention FAILS (Fancy automated internet lecture system) - components, which I am currently developing and where I am close to an initial release.

It is basically a web based app for notetaking/blackboard using a pen in lecture halls.
So for example, at my university we have multiple projectors and a wacom tablet, but probably smartboards will also work (but I do not have one).

The following points should put it apart from other solutions:

  • Support for multiple projectors/screens (extending the blackboard) or multiple devices simultaenously
  • Full open source (AGPL v3)
  • Full integration into moodle via LTI (user management also via moodle)
  • Web based solution
  • Students can follow the lecture on their own device
  • Support for student questions and polls
  • Automated pdf generation
  • Scalable archtitecture using containers
  • Data protection according to european law in mind
  • Developed mainly for Blink based browsers like Edge, Chromium and Chrome

It is developed using my own experience giving lectures in theoretical physics. Currently it is tested at our institute, but stable enough, that I will release it soon and have no problems, that all members might use it next. So for large installations, load tests a pending, so far load is not really measurable (too few users).

You can set it up easily on any linux machine with docker and docker compose, using the repository

https://github.com/fails-components/compositions

and following the readme instructions.

See screenshot for a first impression.

P.S: I hope I have posted to the right forum.
