This would have the two advantages of keeping these questions out of the more hardcode coding forums
Would it be an idea to create a forum for people to post questions/information about the basics of coding with Moodle.

and building up a set of resources for people (like myself) to find out the basics without bugging everyone else.

Hi Mark,
Please check Moodle Docs Developer documentation for information on the basics of coding with Moodle. Further documentation contributions are always welcome!

Hi Mark, your questions are very welcome in this forum. You don't have to worry about bugging anyone. If you do get answers in this forum that you find are helpful then you could do the developer community a big favour by using that information to improve on the Developer documentation on MoodleDocs.
I agree with Gustav - newbie questions are welcome here!
If you want to add to the wiki, perhaps it would be nice to have more documentation for newbie coders, but I think a forum for newbies would be a bit of an artificial distinction.

I have read through the documentation before my original post. Some of us need a little more guidance than that. For instance would it be possible for someone to do a walkthrough on creating a basic module.
I followed the instructions on the readme and this was fine. I created the edit page, but I don't understand how the data gets saved back to the database.

Maybe I am being a bit dense.

Can I put in a vote for a new developers forum actually? Although it may not make much practical difference, it'd make it much easier to find answers to common questions new developers are likely to have. (I also think psychologically having a separate forum might also seem more welcoming to people who don't know that you're a friendly bunch!)
I do think that a separate forum would cause some confusion and overlap for us ... however, how about a New Developer FAQ?
eg http://docs.moodle.org/en/Developer_FAQ
Feel free to start it off with all your questions, that would be most helpful.

OK - I'll try and add stuff in as my questions get answered. I feel like I've spent a lot of time recently trawling the forums looking for answers to basic questions!
