Place of "Add a block" button

Hi

One of the things that I face to it and make us confusing is the place of  "Add a block" when turn edit mode become ON. User should goto the end of Side panel, therefore in some courses with many sections, user should scroll a lot to reach the end of Side panel items to click on it to add the a specific block on the other side of page.

On the other hand, when we add Blocks in boost them, always they are on opposite of Side panel (in dashboard or in courses) , so I think it makes sense that if the place of "Add a block" button be somewhere around the place of added blocks or side by side of new icon for blocks side, when "Edit mode" is on.

These are some ideas:

Hi,

I agree that "Add a block" should really be put somewhere directly visible, when editing mode enabled, and not "hidden" in the navigation drawer (that can be closed/minimised), so that it's usable directly.

Having it in the navigation drawer is counter intuitive 伤心

Having it just under "Edit mode" toggle seams much more intuitive 微笑

I don't know if a tracker issue already exist for that, but if not, you should create one (and put the link here) !

PS : perhaps you'd better post in the "User experience (UX)" forum.

Hi everyone!

I want to clarify that the "Add block" button will be at the top of the block drawer, so it will always be visible when edit mode is on, regarding the height of the page or the number of blocks that are there.

Also, I would like to remind you all that the block drawer "remember" its status (expanded or collapsed) when edit mode is turned on or off (by saving it as a user preference).

About the suggestion of displaying the button outside the drawer to make it "more intuitive", I can confidently say that we have tested this user flow a lot (more importantly with newcomers). We believe that we reached a balance between feature flexibility with a less steep learning curve.

It's easy for us (who know and love Moodle) to move things around with the best of our intentions. However, when testings with non-moodle users, it becomes clear that we should avoid overwhelming them (and yes, adding one extra element in the UI adds tension to the decision-making process). In testings, users were more successful accomplishing their tasks when the functionalities were presented gradually to them.

I hope this makes sense. Let me know your thoughts!

Thanks for sharing your ideas and concerns with us! 👍

Thanks Rafael for clarifying where 'Add block' will be in Moodle 4.0 and the reasoning for putting it there. It all sounds good to me!

Moodle 4.0 Alpha, as used on the QA testing site, still contains a navigation drawer and doesn't yet have the 'Add block' button as shown in Rafael's screenshot. The navigation drawer will be removed and the 'Add block' button added in MDL-70197.
