Using and replacing images site-wide

Hi all,

I am looking for some guidance on using images site-wide. I would like to be able to use the same image in multiple courses, and replace the image at some point in the future. I'm thinking as long as it's on the same URL it'll work, but is it possible to host an image like this? I'm having trouble navigating around the image upload options.

The only think I can come up with is to host the images externally and use a repository plugin to access that. Obviously, choose an image host that a suitable plugin exists for.
