Lesson essay questions and failing grade by default in gradebook

When using the lesson module in conjunction with essay questions, the students receive a failing grade until the essay is graded by the instructor. Is there a way to disable this setting so a grade will be posted in the gradebook only after the essay questions are graded?

We are also hoping to disable this setting. Please post a solution if you happen to find one. I'll do the same!

@Sali and Duane,

If you don't want that "failing grade" to show in the student's gradebook you can simply hide it... and only show it when all essays are graded.

You might also like to use my little plugin Lesson Essay Feedback which will display (to the students only) their previous attempts at Lesson Essays (if any), together with the teacher's comments and their grade (if essays have been graded).

That workaround would not work work currently graded essays and it creates another step for the instructor to remember to do.
