1st time this happened: cannot log into Moodle using same Admin credentials

Hello Community,

We are using Moodle 3.11, Boost theme, own server.

For the first time yesterday, we cannot log into Moodle using the same Admin credentials that we have been using for weeks; this is the message received:

This is even more odd because we successfully logged into Moodle earlier in the day yesterday with the same Admin credentials.

No username or password changes were made to the Admin credentials.

We may try the 'forgotten...' re-set option:

But it would be good to know why this happened? (so we can explain why this happened and more importantly, prevent it from occurring again).

Any other suggested fix? Anyone else experience same and fixed?

Have read https://docs.moodle.org/311/en/Administration_FAQ#I_have_forgotten_the_admin_password

Thanks,

Have you tried a different browser?

Hello Rick,

Yes, with no success, to answer your question.

Another oddity is that we can login using other users' (different) credentials ok, but they are all assigned student roles.

Other suggested fix? Thoughts?

Thanks,

Firstly, is your admin an internal manual user (it should be)?

Are any other accounts failing to log in? You should try resetting the password. If that fixes it, I would find hard to believe that the password could have been changed or corrupted by itself.

Hello Howard,

What do you mean by 'an internal manual user'?

No, other user accounts can log in ok.

Yes, password re-set is our next step.

The admin password has not been changed by anyone and as we previously stated, we logged in earlier in the day ok using the same admin credentials.

Thanks,

I mean it's a 'manual' type account. As opposed to an external LDAP, external database or similar type of account. The very first account when you install Moodle is your primary admin and is always a manual account. It's a bad idea to use 'real' accounts for admins - this is sometimes how trouble starts.

If the password reset doesn't work it tells you it's probably something other than the password. If you see what I mean.

...and how many people have access to the admin account?

When you get in again, check the logs wink
