Manual Completion of a Course

Manual Completion of a Course

I'm exhausted trying to figure this out.  I've watched videos, searched for the answer until I am practically an expert on how to set a course up for manual completion, but cannot find anything on how you actually mark the course complete.  It seems every video and piece of documentation on the subject of manual course completion stops short of actually showing how you do it.

What I have surmised is that, after making all the proper settings, you go to Course Administration, Reports, Activity Completion  and check the activity radio button for the student whom you are marking completion.  You get a message indicating that you are changing status to completed, however, the course never shows completion in the Course Completion report.

What am I missing?  Please help before I go insane.

Hello there. So have you enabled "Manual completion by others" from the settings cog top right (or Course administration, depending on your theme) and then Course completion? Then you choose Teacher and then you can go to Reports >Course completion and you will see a column Approval/ All and you can manually mark the course complete for a particular student.

Hi Mary. Thank you so much for the reply. BTW, I love your training videos!! I sure have enabled 'Manual completion by others" to include all the roles with the capability course:markcomplete as well as set Enable completion tracking to Yes in the course settings - all as you indicated in your video.

I lost you when you got the Reports, Course completion. I cannot do anything on this page as far as marking completion. The only place I have been able to mark completion is via Reports, Activity Completion. The activities show as complete on Report, Course completion but not the course itself.

What does the red around the radio button on Activity completion screen mean? I have red ring around the button and a green checkmark.

Can you share a screenshot of the last few columns on the right of your Course completion report? There should be a column there where you can manually mark students as having completed the course

Screenshot attached.  When I click on any of the radio buttons, nothing happens.  The only way I can complete an activity is via Activity Completion.

Do you know what theme your site uses? Are you able to have it temporarily changed for your course? I don't recognise the round buttons as in the standard theme they don;t look like that.

Workplace is the theme we are using

Changed the these to Classic and the only change was the radio buttons are now squares. Still having the same issue.

Maybe my interpretation of manual completion is incorrect. I want to be able to mark activities and/or the entire course as complete whether or not MWP shows that they submitted the assignment or not; viewed the SCORM module or not, etc.

Mary, I actually 'logged in as' the Student 10009 and completed the assignment by uploading a file. Activity completion shows the activity is completed. I then changed role to Instructor and graded the assignment, however, the checkbox under Instructor on the Course Completion report is still empty and I cannot check it. Course still shows as 'not complete'.

What am I missing?

Jackie - you say you are using Moodle Workplace so I assume you are with a Moodle Partner? I suggest you ask them to check the cron and other settings for your course completion as that should be part of their service.

Thank you Mary for the reply. I have reached out to our Moodle partner. The problem is MWP is new and they don't even know about some of the advanced functions.

I found a document on Moodle.org that says this is possible (https://docs.moodle.org/310/en/Upload_users_in_Moodle_Workplace#Course_Completion) but that's it. It would be nice if the document also explained how. That is the reason for my post. I'm assuming that someone knows how to actually do this.

I've tried and tried to get this to work with the little information provided without success.

Hello Jackie. I just sent you a private message, which hopefully you have received. Please message me privately with details of your Moodle Partner and we can help you get this resolved.

And again, Jackie - going back to your screenshot, edited and reproduced by me below... are you sure you are definitely logged in with the role of "Instructor"  when you try to click on that circle? I have tested on a Workplace site and as long as I have the named role I can tick that box and then the course is marked complete.

Agree with Mary, have never seen the round completion markers. Mine are always square. Solid line mean the student must manually mark it complete. A dotted line means criteria must be met. So assignment1 requires student marking completion. Instructor requires the instructor to mark it (the criteria) and completion requires both assignment1 and Instructor marking to complete.

This looks like the course completion report. When I turn on manual completion, I can click the 'button' next to the student name and it checks.

In activity completion, the red ring around the completion area means you manually overrode the completion. A green check means the activity has a passing score and they achieved it, meeting completion criteria. A blue check means there was no passing score and completion criteria.

What I see in your screen is they (the student) must manually mark the assignment complete. Even if the instructor marks the manual completion complete, the course is not complete because the assignment is not marked. As for assignment completion, you could set it to mark complete when it has been submitted. Or when you have graded the activity as passing, etc.

Additionally, you must have completion sync running on your site. I can't give instructions on this...but if your installation is not set to sync completion, even if you have two checks (assignment done, instructor credit) the course won't mark complete.

Re: Manual Completion of a Course

Good Morning Melanie and thank you for you input. It is much appreciated. I am checking on the 'completion sync'.

I have a question regarding the marking of the completion. In Moodle, can't the teach, admin, etc. mark an activity and/or course complete in order to override any other settings. For instance, you stated that one of the activities requires the student to manually mark the assignment complete. Can't the teacher, admin, etc. do that? Can the teach, admin, etc. only override at the course level?

I do have the one activity as an assignment to submit a file or enter text directly. Is it not possible to mark that complete without the file or text being added?

I truly appreciate any information you can provide. Have a wonderful day!

Re: Manual Completion of a Course

As you mentioned in one of the earlier posts, if you go to Activity Completion, teachers, managers, etc can override the assignment completion check by clicking on it and confirming you intend to override the completion criteria. And...the way you appear to have it set up, the student can check the box as complete, even if they have not added anything. But you cannot override course completion--course completion triggers when all requirements are met (either by the student doing the requirements or the teacher marking the requirements complete manually).

The key for what you want is making sure both the conditions are met so the course completion can sync properly. If, as you indicate below, your sync is on, there should be no problem.
