The confusing "public" option

The confusing "public" option

This is a great tool, but the different options "Private" "Template" and "Public" semms to be confusing to our users.

Many seem to think this, or they understand some of it but not all:

  • "Private" means it becomes a private template, which they can use anywhere in the system
  • "Template" becomes a template anyone can use
  • "Public" also becomes a template anyone can use.

The big issue is the "Public" option, which almost everyone think is a like a community template that any teacher can use, in any course.

  1. The teacher A creating it thinks he makes a template for anyone to use in their own course
  2. The teacher B using it thinks he's creating a new questionnaire for his own course
    1. The teacher B doesn't understand that the students answers are being sent elsewhere, and thinks the questionnaire is faulty
  3. The student answering doesn't know his answers are sent into another course
    1. The student can see his own answers, and tells the teacher he has answered the questionnaire. Still the teacher B cannot se the answers, and there is no way to tell which public questionnaire he copied to begin with, when he is looking att the settings.
  4. The teacher A originally creating the questionnaire are suddenly getting a lot of answers in his questionnaire - more than he has participants in his course, actually... and he cannot see in the settings of his questionnaire where they are coming from.

I suggest some development:

  • A permissions setting to USE public questionnaires, like there already is a permissions setting to CREATE them
(we didn't react on this confusion fast enough, and our system now have several hundred public questionnaires floating around being mistaken for templates)
  • An option to make system wide actual templates, that anyone can create their own questionnaire from to use in their course without sending the answers elsewhere.
  • The option for administrators to easily administrate (find, change, move, delete) both public questionnaires and the suggested system wide templates
  • It would also be great to be able to sort these system wide templates into categories.

Hi Peter,

I do agree that understanding the nature (and use) of the 3 questionnaire types available can be confusing. When I used to maintain the Questionnaire plugin, a few years ago, I spent a lot of time writing (and re-writing) the documentation. I did my best but there may be room for improvement in the description available here: https://docs.moodle.org/39/en/Setting_up_a_questionnaire#Questionnaire_Type
