Just as another point of interest, the grade graphing code I posted a few days ago adds a little "histogram" link by each individual assignment column heading, sort of like the existing stats link next to total columns. However, instead of just showing numeric stats, it actually shows a histogram of scores so you can see the distribution. It also includes the mean at the top of the histogram:
