We experienced the same " Internal server error, additional 500...," then we refresh, followed by either "502" or "503" etc, We close problematic tab, open a new tab pointing to our site, to find the site still up and running.
Our host was also of the view that it is a moodle issue. We asked for the apache error logs. These logs then showed a series of "zend_mm_heap corrupted; pid xxx:tid xxx] AH00052: child pid xx exit signal Segmentation fault (11)" These clearly point to back-end server issues.
