Advanced grading mode in Quizzes

The rubric grading is a very nice feature.

The same advanced grading functionalities (ex. rubrics) would be an excellent add-on to "essay" questions in quizzes.

Example of application:
I ask students to do math demonstrations on paper, scan their answer and submit the file in an essay question.
I would use this to make manual grading in a quizz with high efficiency and good feedback to students.
The possibility to comment and write on PDF is wonderful!

P.S. Not sure where to post this suggestion. Please forgive me and advise.

Right place to ask it, good idea. This question was asked back in 2012, but there has not been any movement on it since.

What features would be essential for you. I ask as the fewer features in a project the more likely it is to be delivered.

For example I like the idea of reusable 'canned' comments. So a marker would pick from a list to add to the feedback. This would have the additional benefit of making it possible to do stats on the items picked and get an idea of what are the most common errors. Would that alone be a significant improvement in marking?

Yes it would be a significant improvement!
I'm (we, in our program) extensively (more and more) using rubric to evaluate so it was a natural proposal.
If you have hints on that it would be easier to implement, then it would have me choose it of course.

P.S. Looking at the marking guide method, yes the canned comments are most interesting and could be used as rubrics in fact, i'd just have to translate the comment to a grade. that is easy enough! ;)

Hi Serge,
this would be an awesome feature indeed. Whenever I needed to do more or less massive manual grading, I chose the Assignment activity and didn't think of the quiz. May I ask you what advantages do you see in using the quiz vs the assignment in this kind of tasks?
Thanks!

Hi,
I teach electronics and math at university level, pushed to remote teaching by you-know-what. (this might contribute to understand my needs but i need to add that though forced by circonstances my experience is rather positive)

I've used quizzes for exams.
I used various types of questions including essay questions so that students can make a math development on paper, scan and file as answer in the essay question.
Then it has to be graded manually and that is where I would like to do it not only efficiently put also while providing true feedback to students.

I thought of using assignments but only one "question" is allowed in an assignment.
Then student would have to collate many scans which complicates both submission and grading.

Voilà!

I see now, Serge. Yes, for multiple submissions the assignment can be not that efficient.
Thanks for your explanation.

Morning Serge, and all others

We love to use Quiz Essays for our exams, but would LOVE it even more if we can add annotated comments (as what you would do when you grade a PDF document in a normal Assignment).

Any chance that this feature could become available? Or does anybody else know how we can add annotated comments to a manual grading of an Essay type answer in the Quiz.

Hi Serge,

You might be interested in a plugin being developed at the university of Louvain (Belgium) : https://github.com/zabellemotte/assignfeedback_writeup/wiki

It was presented at the French MoodleMoot in Rennes in July 2019. I found it quite convincing. Unfortunately, there does not seem to be any current development.

You might like to contact Isabelle Motte re this project.
