Dear Moodlers,

I would like to ask how much do we need as CPU, RAM, shared_buffers and shared_memory to allow a 1,200 simultaneous connections for quizzes ?

Hi Visvanath, thanks for contacting,

Well actually it's not an issue in terms of issue, but just a question asked on how much do we need as capacity to allow 1,200 simultaneous connections for quizzes; The reason behind it is that we want to see if we can afford to increase this number to 1,200 or a lower number. That's all.

And the link you've sent was very informative
Thanks !

A batch of 1200 candidates taking an on-line exam at the same time creates a sharp and very high peak which is not predictable. What does "at the same time" mean? Do they enter the exam within a minute or within five minutes? As you see, there is already a factor of five. Then how big is the exam? 10 questions or 50 questions on the first page? (I read in another discussion all the questions on one page is your norm.) Do the questions have images, or even video?

The only thing you can do is to observe the machine under such conditions. Ideally you schedule a series of exams with increasing number of candidates, until the server can not handle. This is not always feasible and not nice for the candidates. The alternative is to simulate such loads and to have some measure how the number of artificial users translate to real users. One such approach is documented under https://docs.moodle.org/dev/JMeter.
