Moodle Offline and Online Synchronization

Moodle Offline and Online Synchronization

Hi,

I'm fairly new to Moodle and would like to ask a how to sync portable moodle to online Moodle.

We already configured our portable moodle and is working great. We call it Portable Learning Management System (PLMS). But the current set-up is purely offline. Teachers create courses (with resources and activities), and distributes this to the students via flashdrives. Students then installs the portable moodle in the PC's to access the course. Depending on the teachers preference, students returns the flashdrives every month for checking of activities.

What we are trying to do is to create a system wherein the teachers and students can sync data from Portable Moodle via a server. Real time synchronization is not required because of the internet issues. As long as teacher and students can sync data when they have access to a good internet connection, that would be fine.

Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated.

Hi

Interesting! Could you tell us more about the flash drive? How do students "install" it in the PC? Does is assume a particular operating system (like PortableApps)? You know that there is a stand-alone Moodle on a flash-card for Raspberry Pi https://moodlebox.net/ ? In fact I had a similar idea https://discuss.moodlebox.net/d/27-a-pool-of-moodleboxes-an-idea which I didn't follow up.

Technically, the Moodle Mobile App provids the functionality in part. Since there is a Mobile App Desktop too, together they go a long way. One big difference though is the fact that the initiation and the (sporadic) syncing should happen through the Internet.

Doing it yourself has to overcome an obstacle imposed by the way databases work. The database records generated at the sites will conflict, because they are not aware of the data at the other sites.

This topic has been discussed a couple of times in the Hardware and performance forum. Try a forum search.

I was thinking of doing the same thing with our Rural Mountain Students in Eastern Kentucky (Public 6-12) But I was thinking of using the moodle app which would sync when offline, just not sure if the app could be installed on an ubuntu stick running linux, then ran on a chromebook booting to USB ( yes I know the Chromebook would have to be jailbroke or hacked. Thoughts?

The Moodle Mobile App has a surprising amount of off-line capabilities. If you want the App on Ubuntu you could try the Moodle Desktop https://download.moodle.org/desktop/.

I set this all up and tested it, having been a Moodle admin since 2003, and it worked great. I jumped a EnGenius wifi bridge/extender to my truck with wifi for sync,  optimized learning activities for offline mode/app delivery. And it worked - flawlessly! Jump Drive was not needed as moodle app is on chrome store. I was so excited I called the KDE (Kentucky Department of Education) because NPR had done a report sayin how Kentucky did not know how to address this issue (the issue of offline students during COVID). After calling the KDE they told me they would only look at Google Classroom, despite its irrelevance in the aforementioned scenario as google classroom is incapable of offline mode. anyway, after a frustrating conversation with the COVID VLE team with the KDE they proceeded to call my district and report me for using Moodle where they said I would be fired if I did not use Google classroom. So now I am using GAFES garbage but using Xerte to develop content for my offline students - oh and online as-well - shhh don't tell. Not sure who is paying who but Google Classroom has American education like Trump has redneck supporters.

Hi Chad

I still remember our epic discussion in the Lounge, I think we failed. The result is now clear: Yep, Kentucky has failed - fallen a long time ago. What do you expect? Isn't this the State represented in the US Senate by the notorious Mitch McConnell? What about his boss, the Commander in Chief who calls soldiers suckers and the fallen losers? Who can not stand the veterans, the amputations, The US don't want to see that.

Well, nothing to do with Hardware nor Performance - (luckily) very much OT. May be back to the Lounge?
