This validation display isn't working for me either in moodle 3.9.
I not sure how to check the formulas question version when I'm not an admin. The version was probably installed last summer.
I can see that there is a formatcheck.js as part of the page source, but I don't see anything happening for the various input types like number, numeric and numerical formula.
