Students cannot access WIKI, nor can I when in Student View

Students cannot access WIKI, nor can I when in Student View

I have just spent a couple of hours trying to set up a WIKI for my students to use next week.

I logged into student view and got error messages.  I could not even access the WIKI in student view.  I went online, found your forum.  There was a teacher who posted to the log with the exact same problem.  I followed all the directions that given to her.

I went into the settings -- checked permissions.  We all have permissions -- they as students, me as faculty.

I went "Locally Assigned roles".  I assigned them as students.  I assigned me as "faculty" and "student".   I still could not access the WIKI using "student view".  I asked three of my students to test it for me.  They were not able to open the WiKI either.

This is one of many things I've tried to do with Moodle to get my classes online and have NOT been able to do.

Please help, Nikki

Hi Nikki,

Unfortunately I can't see the image you attached to your post. Can you copy and paste the error messages that you obtained?

Are your students enrolled in the course? You should see them listed on the Participants page. (You shouldn't need to do anything with locally assigned roles.)

Hello Helen,

I don't know if Nikki gave up back in March. I have a similar problem. The error message I get when I select Locally assigned roles, Permissions and Check permissions is

"Error
Exception - Call to a member function get() on null"

My aim is a bit different. I would like to create a wiki of course content for my course. I do not want to students to be able to edit it at all.

Thanks,

James

James, the error message you are seeing is related to the Wiki export plugin. I have filed a bug report with the developer, but as the plugin is only supported up to version 3.1, it may not be fixed anytime soon.

James - good news, the Developer has just fixed the problem with the error message when you try to click on permissions. I've tested it and can confirm that it is new working as expected. Can you download the plugin from https://github.com/synergylearning/moodle-local_wikiexport/archive/master.zip and install it again.

When you have the new code...

  1. Go to the wiki.
  2. Click on the settings cog and choose "Permissions"
  3. Scroll down to "Create new wiki pages" and delete the student role.
  4. Students will then not be able to create new wiki pages in that wiki only.
If you want the same for ALL wikis on your site, go to Site Administration > Users > Permissions > Define Roles
and do the same for the student role.

Many thanks. I've just seen this good news. Unfortunately, in the meant time I've had my theme changed to Adaptable and can't open the wiki at all. I'll have to go back to Boost until this is sorted. And try out your permissions solution. Thanks again.

Hi Jon,

I was waiting until Moodle and the Adaptable theme were updated before taking the steps you provided, but they are not necessary in the scenario. The permissions are working. This is good news for everyone!

Best wishes,

James
