I completely avoid this confusion by having my "dummy user" enrolled in the course as a student. I have the dummy user logged in a different browser and can follow my students' experience 100%. On my browser I can delete the single attempt of the dummy, if I want the dummy to try again.

There may be elegant methods of doing this. For example giving the teacher also a student role in his own course. But not keen on trying, too risky for serious exams!
